What is, in your opinion, the best STALKER-like experience there is out there?

Is it one of the actual S.T.A.L.K.E.R.?

FC2 & 3 with mods somewhat has those feels even if it was mild. Metro games does that too.

Some shill said that Homefront 2 basically like that, but I'm not convinced yet. Maybe if the crack come out I pirate it

STALKER: SoC, for sure.

vanilla is actually pretty boss, and the way any rookie should start with. That being said, an experienced veteran like me barely gets any challenge out of it anymore, so mods like AMK are god-sent for us.

None. STALKER really is unique in numerous ways, no matter how its later "clones" may make the situation appear to outsiders.

It's definitely still my absolute favorite.
Stays true to the game's original style and feel, yet restores some cut content and makes the Zone more lively + dangerous.

remember to apply the Starter Pack's fixes on it.
CS is the one game that really needs all the possible help you can get.

That being said, it's kinda sad that people skip CS without giving it a shot. The jump from SoC to CoP can be quite extreme without CS in the middle.

There is. And ShadersMax, as far as I know.
That being said, I recall ZRP's later version adding more features than past ones, some which were enabled by default.

When it comes to mods like SWO, there was already a v3 back in the days the pack was put together, but it is notably more demanding to use than v2, thanks to the actually dynamic weather system it introduces. Some also considered it too grey.

Partly because the devs not only had had two games to work as their alpha and beta testing phases, but they also finally got enough time and funds to do actual play-testing before release.

Is it fun? I know it doesn't have any Main Quests, but is stuff actually happening there (faction wars, military raids, mutant invasions) or is it just a resource tool with nothing happening and you're just there to walk around in the maps.

I haven't played much but from what i have played, i played bandit faction and the starting area is between the truck cemetery and garbage, and also sometimes has mutants running around/into the base as well. There are quite a few mutants and other humans moving around at any given time as well so theres is definately stuff happening as you said. Try it out for a few hours i'd say and if you can't really come up with anything to do then leave it.

that's because it's insanely huge mod in all possible ways. It not only cranks up texture resolution, overhauls the weather and increases + unleashes the AI activity, it also increases the AI's offline/online switch distance quite a bit.

That, combined with the fact that the game's still a mere 32-bit executable (one with poor multicore support), results this micro-stutter. The game's trying its best to keep up, but can't utilize all the resources there would be.

The 3GB RAM FIX and lowering the AI distance value help quite a bit already.

It has no shit main questline cutting you off from maps, so you can go wherever you want right off the bat. You can mod it so that it has a fuckton more mutants and less humans. Or if that's not your thing you can just download Warfare and wage good ol faction wars.

Ignore the Complete in the headline, it's still a standalone fix. Never heard of 4GB fix, and 32-bit exes can't even go above 3GB anyway, being stuck with 2.5gb by default.

I recall the vanilla values being somewhere close to 100 meters or so... maybe 80.

in CoPs' more open maps, especially with weather mods that reduce / remove the distance fog, this may however make NPCs pop out more clearly as they come closer.

I'd start by lowering the base value a little bit. If it is at some crazy number like 300m, drop it to half, 150.

I played the game on a laptop and it was playable. There were times when it was a crashfest but that eventually got fixed and it became pretty stable. For a stalker mod that is. I almost finished the game with it.

It does crash from time to time though but usually it's not totally random and you can fix it.

You can become OP way before then, as the stashes' locations are the exact same as vanilla. The contents are different, but that's a moot point as you can make tons of dosh by selling the useless crap that is there.
