I think the animators quickly learned that they'd never be able to match the choreography Monty did, so now they're using pretty medium-close shots and quick cuts to hide the fact that the choreography is bland. At least, that's what I noticed during the fights in the second episode.

Perhaps the 'underwhelming' comment was more directed at Weiss, for being in the shadow of a girl two years her junior. The Schnee legacy has already become a big point for Weiss' character arc, and Winter may not agree that Weiss is living up to it. Maybe Winter is simply too caught up on the fact that Ruby is only 15, despite being a prodigy. Weiss could've waxed poetic about Ruby in every letter, but people will always have their own bias and convolutions, and Winter strikes as the type that would have an excess of both.
In other words, Weiss is a precious little princess who is so hopelessly in love with Ruby that she can't help but tell her big all about her no matter what she might think.

The animation itself is well handled, as a long time fan of 3d animation, and going into it as a field of study, one can notice they do pay attention to detail and have good model work and framing. The thing is, it has none of the monty soul to it. Nothing is very fast or punchy anymore, and the camera is not even a little bit as dynamic. Compare the action flow of the recent matches to the Neo fight or really any fight in the other volumes and you notice a big difference, or at least I do.

A little head canon trope I secretly hope RT will somehow be smart enough to but in is a twist on the "lovers" fury bit. For example, Ruby gets the crap kicked out of her, maybe even a totally obvious death fake-out, and Weiss goes full Yang on the perpetrator.
Ideally, Yang herself would get angry and go for the kill, but before she even gets a hit in, a battle-crying Weiss rips them to shreds with a sick glyph combo. She would then run over to comfort her dear Rubles and make sure they are ok. I know RT would never go for it, so really the best I can pray for is her just looking concerned or actually turning of the Tsun for once when Ruby gets hurt. Of course, even that is probably asking too damn much.

On the one hand I'd really like to share with you the fanfic I've been writing for a while now, but on the other it has no explicit yuri as of yet.
There's plenty of subtext, but the only outright romance written so far is het.
It starts off as a sort of rebuild of Volume two and branches off into its own thing.
So far I've been working on the story and characters.
There will eventually be plenty of yuri.

As for the characters not knowing what's going on, why should they? They're basically teenagers dealing with terrorism and politics and stuff that should, by all rights, go way over their heads. You see what's going on through their eyes so it's natural for you to not get it immediately either.

Why aren't /u/ guys making a fic that uses the characters (the only good thing about RWBY along with the gay girls) and a bit of the premise of the series to write an actually good plot? There are plenty of fics like that, Soulbound is a fairly impressive novelization. Hell, Innocence, one of the best things I've read period was conceived solely because the author was pissed at RT for fucking up Breach. White Rose of Vermilion, The Dark & The Light and Rush all incorporate some of the elements of the original story to create something altogether new - it's almost as if that is the defining characteristic of a fanfic.
The reason I'm not writing amazing things right this moment is because that's fucking hard. It's easy to point at a plot and say that it's shit and full of holes but actually creating something better isn't as easy. Thus, a congregation of angry anons pointing fingers at RT and not writing anything better themselves.

Kinda hoping to write a fic with the RWBY girls from the trailers. Yes, I realize that those are the same girls as Team RWBY canon-wiseat least Black, Yellow, and possibly White are, but I hear that there were some good fan ideas of their personalities and backgrounds before the show startedleading to the spiral of disappointment.
Something like Red was a soldier or monster hunter or, most appropriately, a hunter(ess). Weiss was thought of to be a princess or some shit. Blake, maybe a Robin Hood equivalent, and Yang like a bounty hunter?

I'd love to see some concrete evidence, I have only found offhanded remarks and contradictions regarding the subject. I think that what actually happened was that Monty originally called Red noncanon because it was a a tech demo, when it was made the worldbuilding was barely done on conceptual level. Since nothing substantial actually happens in the trailer I think that RT decided to just call them all canon instead of singling out Red every time when it's questioned.

We kinda do, actually. Remember that even if they're super powered teens with crazy ass weapons, they still need an education of sorts.
As for the trailer personalities, Yang and Blake are fine but I'd change Ruby to be more cocky and arrogant, so that when she goes to Beacon she gets hit with HUMILITY and easy character development. And Weiss came across as someone shy and reserved with a huge burden to carry (the huge Knight, natch).
I think with those you can have a pretty good basis for an AU.

Actually, I would try. I'm not saying I'm an excellent writer myself, but the writing of the series feels clumsy. There is little to no character development (EXCEPT FUCKING JAUNE? WHO THE FUCK CONCENTRATES ON A NOT EVEN DEUTERAGONIST AT THIS POINT?) and they just keeping shoving in our faces that yes, Cinder is conspirating, that these guys are up to no good and considering that the military guy (can't remember his name) has built an army; the White Fang has joined Cinder and shit, there'll be a huge motherfucking war. Okay we get it. I pretty much got it during the second season. But at some point, just get to it. If you don't want to further deepen the characters, then just begin with the climactic story.

In what occurrences is is that there is little to no education? Firstly, RWBY is set in another world, so nothing says the same politics as our world apply. Secondly, it has a somewhat conflictual world. In times of war, people are more focused in surviving than educating their children. Or rather, they do it on the go, trying to learn by themselves.
So we could use a school premise, or we could not. Starting from the moment where you actually let a fifteen years old girl fight with a sniper scythe, you have no qualms making the story unrealistic.

Actually, I picture Ruby to be more of the lone wolf kind of girl. A very edgy character who has to join up with the others. And really, they would be some sort of Breakfast Club kind of crew, forced to work together in the face of adversity.
Some thing we should keep in mind: if we reset the story based on simply the trailers, that is to say only the visual and situational design of the characters, we may quite possibly totally change everything. Including the names of our character, like calling her something else instead of Ruby.
If you put a bunch of misfits together and they're facing something trying to crush them down, I picture there being a lot of travelling and stuff. Like, have an important focus on different factions, on wilderness, and on different technological advancements, if we're talking about robots taking their places.

Alternate universes are the consequences of this. I don't know whether you've read the Flashpoint comics, but they quite change from the original stories. Like, Batman (Bruce Wayne)'s mom becoming the joker because the former is dead, and his father took the mantle of Batman in his stead, but being a much more ruthless and violent Batman. That story would be technically a reset, but could be seen as a "what if" of sorts. If you change the origin story, you can change the personality of a character. Weiss became bitchy because everyone hates the Schnee company and so she hates them back. Take that away, maybe she won't be bitchy.

I genuinely dislike this character because she acts too much like a bitch. A good tsundere is something hard to achieve. For example, take Haruhi Suzumiya. She's not a tsundere because it's not to hide her feelings. She's just a selfish bitch who is goofy enough to be likeable.

The Flashpoint universe is awesome. Basically, Barry Allen/ The Flash goes back in time to prevent to murder of his mother, but in doing so, he fucks up literally everything.
I FUCKING love the idea of the cold and shy character. Not only I'm a snowflakekin (my tumblr oc fursona is a snowflake). No fuck this. Anyway, I love anything that is related to snow and ice in fantasy. I would like to see that, and Weiss becoming more outgoing as time goes on. Okay, Weiss is stuck in a sort of trap of ice, a frozen throne of sorts. She was put there by her family and kingdom because her powers became increasingly powerful, and increasingly dangerous and incontrollable.
Ruby, a passerby tomb raider/bounty hunter/hitwoman of sorts passes by and frees Weiss out of her death trap, and people don't want Weiss out of the death trap. They become fugitives.
It's funny because it reprises something I had as an idea for one of my own stories.

Let's sum up what we got 'til now.
So there's a country, the military took over (let's say it's a coup d'état) and the hunters and huntresses become a problem because they are somewhat independent from the state and must fight to restore peace and freedom over the world, or so that's why their institution was established. Some join with the military, others decide to fight back, and they become exiles.
Ruby, one huntress amongst many encounters the Snow White Princess, which we know as Weiss, and frees her from her ice prison, and so they go on, striving for survival. I'd love to see them struggle in a dangerous environment, since the "frozen throne" would kind of turn the forests around into a sort of ever winter.
We may then include Yang and Blake after that. Not sure whether we ditch Yang and Ruby being sisters, but it could be interesting keeping them sisters, as Ruby is a lone and secluded person who is cold to even her own sister, the latter which only wants to restore their bond, even though she just appears as an airhead who only seeks thrill. We can even keep Blake being a Faunus and fighting discrimination, because that's a rare interesting thing in the plot of the series.

With no place to go and little money that was left she start living in bad part of some city.

I got another idea this time politics, Yang and Blake.
Ok so military gov wants a lot of control. Faunus are problem. Since SDC supported coup so a lot of higher ups are from the company. They hate faunus.
Because White Fang is terrorist group and new gov want stability they have green light for action. Big operation. Like 100 to 1 ratio on soldiers. Total slaughter. Few that survives become slaves in SDC (now state) industry. New gov like the idea. BIG efficiency.
Because people hate faunus they get aproval for strict laws. Special ghetto like districts are forming(strict laws aren't aproved everywhere but you now most of country has them). Someone broke law? Well thats SDC slavery for you(not work only. Some higher ups like to get kinky).
Blake and some brave wariors (faunus and few human) fight with it ,but its not organisation, mostly 20 people max gangs spread around country.
Yang is in mercenary guild(i would put Coco there). They got this BIG deal. Hunt down few rebels and you can buy private island kind of deal.
They start investigation. Once they face Blake team they gain knowledge of what is happening (gov covered it up). Decide to not hunt them but also dont help them. Gov is angry because they break deal. Yang ,Coco, Yatsuhashi and Fox decide to help Blakes gang escape(gov tracked them down). Gang and guild fall apart. Velvet(was in the gang) decide to them up creating CFVY and Yang fells sory and follows Blake(also excuse to travel in search for her sis).

I think there are plenty of written fics around. If you want to remake RWBY and make it better than the source, it should be something that employs visuals as well. A higher quality VN (Story focused), comic, 3DCG mini-series etc.
Imho, you'd be better off not doing RWBY (the four characters), which will always limit you to being a fan AU, but instead do something with NDGO, the Malachite twins, or your own original characters from a non-Vale kingdom, the White fang, etc.Because that, if well done, could theoretically be introduced to RT, who enjoys fan content in general (but not shipping) and possibly approved as canon or spotlighted.
But regardless, it should be visual. You aren't going to really get that sense of trumping RT without it.

Ohhh, that. Yeah, that seems like a neat idea. But that would make Ruby the center of attention. The best way of hyping a character and making them look cool, is making them edgy mysterious. If everyone knows about Ruby being the daughter of the hero Summer Rose, it removes the edgy part of it, everyone already has high hopes from her, and when she saves the day, she looks less like a total badass. Take for example Mahou Sensei Negima in which Negi strives to become like his father. It made his personality boring at some point, because he looked just like the shonen character who wants to prove themself.

Most of the action happens after school, outside of it. Same thing for Fate/Stay Night.
In other words, the high school setting may seem logical, it is totally unnecessary. What is unnecessary should be ditched. Storywriting focuses on what's important. Then you go on making details up on top of the essential stuff.
From my own writing experience, I've always written chapter by chapter, and each chapter had some sort of important event. If it didn't, it was going to be important to foreshadow or set up the upcoming events. And so, I had a scene in mind. Generally a visual image, a few important speech lines, but that's all. All that was built around was leading up to the climactic event of the chapter. And every event was to leading up to the climactic event of the story.
So yeah, high school setting: no go.
