Have a tanoshii new year, /u/.
Usuzan's an orgy.
No one commented about Sawaya's ability to literallymake people orgasm?
Mairu/Himeko, Toki/Ryuuka, you can all go home now. Nothing can top this ability as the gayest ability in Saki universe. Maybe not even in all manga/anime universes.
>>1951506
Is it a big upgrade from {pictured} or not?
>>1951506
Who fall for that? Nelly or kyoko?
>>1951545
Far, far lewder. Mairu and Himeko's ability only affect themselves, while Sawaya's can affect anyone. Plus, her ability works even outside of mahjong matches. In fact, she forbids herself from using it in a mahjong match because it's directly messing with the opponent's body.
>>1951593Nelly, but only after the match is over.
I'm still mad Ritz made that girl from ashitga seem so powerful. It'll only a consolation when Saki beats the shit out of her in the finals.
>>1951609
well it would give a new meaning to the phrase "Rain Stopped Play" in that case.
>>1951614
The fact that her "presence" is now strong enough for even Teru to acknowledge her is quite irritating, I like her as a character but not as a Mahjong player..
Ritz seems to be really trying to hype up Nelly and Shizu as the dangerous players in the captains finals match. Nelly understandably though.
I am thinking Awai is gonna have some focus during the finals since Saki and Awai's match results are sort of similar,. They both went into their matches as Monsters but left as underdog players that won 2nd place by a small margin.
>>1951696
>They both went into their matches as Monsters but left as underdog players that won 2nd place by a small margin.
That's what I'm going for too. The result of both semis is for Shirai and Kiyosumi to make a stronger comeback. Both teams also got stuff like Sumire's tell, Takami not unleashing her power at full, Mako facing chinese mohjong or Tacos holding back.
>>1951506
I'm hoping Sawaya also has a bit of Toki's powers and the fact that she did that to Nelly means Nelly gets a mini Sawaya to make others orgasm during finals.
>>1951771
Tulpa Toki ruined Ryuuka but damn if it wasn't cute.
>>1951696
>The fact that her "presence" is now strong enough for even Teru to acknowledge her is quite irritating
Why's that irritating?
If anything I'm angry Ritz didn't do this from the start. Shizu was clearly designed as a monster-level player from the beginning (with the whole mountain-related powers and her outdoorsy nature), but for some fucking reason Ritz thought it would be a good idea to hide all that till the final match of Side B, making it look like a last-minute ass-pull.
Mahjong poll~
http://strawpoll.me/6492048
I wonder how many active players we have, we used to host small tournaments on tenhou, I wouldn't mind hosting another one for the sake of old times.
As for how often you've got to play to be considered an 'active player' I'll leave it up to you. As far as I'm concerned you're 'active' enough if you have played any games in the second half of 2015 (or this year of course).
>>1955992
I swear I will master mahjong and join you girls by the time shinohayu gets animated.
>>1951614
>>1951696
I was also terribly irritated by Achiga my first time watching as well. But during my second viewing I think the problem is more with the show than with the character itself. The pacing in Achiga is absolutelly terrible. Season 1 managed to convey both a good amount of backstory for the characters and a good amount of mahjong to show you how powerful each character was. Achiga, on the other hand not only focused to much on backstory, it also focused too much on the mahjong backstory of other teams that by the time Achiga gets to the semi-finals it doesn't even feel like they've acomplished anything. All of the abilities of the Achiga players are quite good, (exept maybe bowler girl, and 2nd main girl, you know the one) however the show didn't really bother showing anyone until very late. It's the problem of telling you they're really strong instead of showing you they're really strong. I don't think (or hope) they'll win, but I'm definitely expecting them mess some stuff up.
>>1955992
I have a mahjong app on my phone and play against the computers. None of my friends know or care how to play mahjong;-;
>>1955992
Are you mahjong bloggers really so hard up that you have to come to /u/?
>>1956127
Achiga's a decent team but far from being final boss of this gym. Kuro got destroyed, Yuu got the high ground because of a tell she can barely see, Ako did just fine, Arata was ignored for half of the match and Mairu was the one who actually did more damaged on Seiko, someting similar happened in Shizu's match, she was ignored by the other three during the first half, and Himeko took most of Awai's points.Since the surprise factor's already wasted (and the emotional charge flashbacks too), I doubt they will have the same luck in the main manga.
>>1956155
Sorry but you'll have to rephrease this, as is I have a hard time understanding what you meant by this.
>>1956130
>None of my friends know or care how to play mahjong
I know your pain. I've been contemplating buying a set for so many years now but each time I'm about to do so I realize I wouldn't have anybody to play with.
Fortunately internet is a thing. Still, I hope I'll get the chance to play IRL someday.
>>1956013
Should've sworn you'll learn how to play before the main manga will be over!
Then again there's no guarantee Shinhayu will actually get animated so there's that.
>>1956281
The /a/ Saki threads are infested with mahjong bloggers, it's just surprising to see the infestation spread to /u/ of all places.
>>1956283
Oh, so you mean it like that.
I'll have you know /u/ had an active mahjong group before /a/ did. It's just that it was small and over time it kinda fell apart.
I'm the person who wrote the current OP pasta and that pasta is so ancient it even includes a mangatraders link. It's just that I was out of the Saki loop for a long while, for reasons. Caught up on Shinohayu, Biyori, main manga yesterday. Biyoris were great and I enjoyed Shinohayu more than I think I would (Side A didn't turn out well so I wasn't very optimistic) but semis of Saki proper (I reread them from first round) were a bit disappointing.
Oh, that reminds me, I totally wanted to repost the Awai R'lyeh pasta because it's appropriate now.Thing is I no longer have it and the current /u/ archive doesn't have threads that old. I bet nobody around here has it either...
Anyway I plan to edit the OP slightly and add bakabt batches for anime and whatnot after this thread will hit the bump limit.
>>1956291
Awai and Saki are actually fraternal twins. The thing is, Teru paid more attention to Awai than she did to Saki. Traumatized by this Saki grew to despise Awai; when she saw the opportunity to get rid of her and monopolize Teru she pushed the weakened Awai (she caught a cold) of her wheelchair into the sea. Of course, things didn't go as well as planned and Teru left along with Saki's mother and virtually disowned Saki. Saki repressed this memory and she no longer remembers what really happened.
Awai sank to the bottom of the sea and ended up in R'lyeh after a while. There she got possesed by Cthulhu and turned into an Eldritch abomination.
Teru probably realized this long ago but she still can't just outright state it; though her body was never found Awai was declared dead long ago. Awai ended up changing her name to Oohoshi and Teru never publicly admited that Awai is actually her younger sister.
>>1956303
Jokes aside Saki put Goldfish through fire and water. Awai's name has both kanji. So maybe we shall se some weird reincarnation, replacement waifu thing going on.
>>1956281
I have the 2.0 and 3.0 sets but I've only touched them once, to look at the pictures on the tiles...
Rena's getting a bit close to Shino.
>>1955911
You partially answered yourself why I found it irritating, Shizu never showed any sign of being a monster class player literally until her semi's match, even in the quarter finals she scrapes 2nd place barely and her winning hand didnt have much hint of her being a monster, just a tenacious player.
The second reason is probably something that only bothered me but since we got that first scene of Shiraitodai (where they are all looking glum as fuck after Awai wins the match) in the original anime I had been looking forward to Shiraitodai being Kiyosumi's main rival that they have to aspire to. When I heard Awai being hyped up intiailly for being the monster player playing Captain for Shiraitodai, not Teru, that made me assume that she was gonna be a significant obstacle in Saki's attempt to reconcile with her sister and therefore her personal main rival. However its pretty evident that isnt the way it went which is fine i guess, just personal disappointment, but for Saki to have just finished her semi's match barely getting 2nd place, I would have assumed the first thing I hear from Teru or Awai is about Saki's performance, instead we got Shizu being shilled for again.
Like i said though, I do like Shizu, and i do like Achiga (their biyori stories are some of the best), but as they progressed in the tournament and transitioned from their side story to main series they sometimes feel like obnoxious party crashers.
woman i forgot about Saki, did anything ever happen? i think i last stopped at 90
>>1960373
Isn't her power geared toward canceling out others? So it would only make sense that you wouldn't realize that until she faced them
>>1961106
Koromo beat her. While Koromo is still one of the top monster players, Shizuno's power made Akado (the one who put up enough of a fight that Kokaji, the player who should be stronger than Teru and definitely Koromo, holds her in high regard) break out in a cold sweat and players from who knows how far sense her. That's a pretty big leap in power.
>>1961106
The thing is, canceling powers fucking suck, particularly on main characters. If you're doing a superpower show, why would you write it so that the most important battles won't involve superpowers?
>>1961127
I think the series needs to dial it back a bit. I'm actually interested in some real mahjong strategy, not just "lol super powers."
>>1961106
>>1961119
She can't actiavte her hax at will like other monsters, first she must warm up, thus koromo beat her easily and saki didn't feel her the first time.
>>1961127
Yeah, it's awful. Like facing off a tkd fighter but first you shoot her in the legs. Hopefully her powers will become a bit more rational in the main manga.
>>1961274
I agree. It was kept in check during Nagano qualifiers. If you think about players with actual special abilities there were just a few, and they had common sense explanations usually (like Tacos just getting tired in hanchan games or Stealth Homo being easy to overlook). At first Saki was just lucky and had a signature winning hand but during semifinal she started openly stating she knows which tiles will form kan, what some of her draws will be etc. The only real superpower player was Komodo.
But since then the manga started turning into 'superpower of the week' where the focus shifts to one of the players, explains her bullshit superpower, uses it for a couple of hands and then moves to the next player with the next bullshit superpower. Even Nodoka, who was supposed to be a digi player who completely ignores supernatural bullshit was retconned to be a player who's extremely lucky ('a strong determination will make the right tiles come to you').
This could've been kept entertaining and 'flavorful' without going to such great lengths. Each player has some quirks of their own that represent their personality - some people push hard (zetsuu), some people have good defense (betaori), others have a good intuition and rely on it (mawashiuchi). It's actually been done that way in the past too, with Hisa or Touka for example. Why not stick to that formula?
I don't wanna just pin the blame on some character in particular as ultimately it's undeniable that Ritz is at fault but Toki's introduction was probably the turning point. If you'll think back to Saki thread from back then a lot of people argued that what Toki does is basically cheating. It sure felt that way at the time because there were like no other players who did the same.
>>1961102
I don't think we've had any major plot developments, aside from the introduction of Goldfish (see >>1956303) but that has yet to be resolved. We went through 2 games since you dropped the manga, sasuga Ritz.
I just realized what bothered me about Achiga. They're being treated more as main characters than Kiyosumi themselves. Achiga's the team that goes through special training. Achiga's the team that has a traumatized ex-player giving them distilled Mahjong knowledge. Achiga's the only team that actually gets better throughout the series.

Since I'm a Grandmaster-fag, I'm up for making a transcription of the text if there is any interest in something like that. That's a far step from an actual translation or typeset though. Is your so-called 'half-assed' Japanese enough that that would help?
