Great music, great set pieces. They're Errol Flynn-like fun that give their actors the space to give their hammiest performances. All four of them, to varying degrees. Looking forward to the upcoming fifth, hope they don't fuck it up.
God bless Johnny Depp. You can tell he had a lot fun with the role of Jack Sparrow, he was very well-cast.

Jack wasn't supposed to be the protagonist in the first one, it really was Elizabeth. In fact, they were worried that Jack was going to be so outrageous that people would be put off by the gay pirate thing. When they loved it and Depp got an Oscar nod, he became a bigger character in the next ones. To their credit though, they never actually flipped everything to make him the protagonist, although he was for the fourth one, and probably for the next.

I think it might've gone too far in a few places. So many characters are comedic foils at once that it can get annoying for some, and it's a little long. And the story itself is a little convoluted. I personally love it too.
Maybe the first one. 2 and 3 were bad, but at least they were still entertaining to watch once.

Something about wacky mid-2000s movies are comfy to me, probably a really loose sense of nostalgia, I didn't much care for them when they came out but I was surrounded by the craze and all that

Disagree I liked a lot of the set pieces in the 4th movie. Like the mermaid scene and the final battle between multiple factions.
The problem with Pirates 4 is that it seems they went out of their way to remove as much of the "crazy" as they could since it seems one of the big takeaways from 2 and 3 was that they were just "too much"
It also does not have a memorable visual identity at all.
Originally, the entire intro to the film was set in London during the winter, and the Sparrow chase was in the middle of the snow, the concept art looks very fresh for the series, but they dropped this, and the filmed version is just plain
Blackbeard and his sword are very underplayed. The entire magical aspect of the film is actually strangely underplayed.
The design of the fountain of youth is plain, not memorable, Verbinski would have made it looks completely ethereal, and the Marshall's climax is again, boring and without much visual invention.
Pirates 2 and 3 are overlong, and messily plotted, but good god, they are some of the most visually inventive and striking blockbusters of last decade.

I love all that shit. I love the scope of everything, the action, and how much Depp, Rush, and Nighy are into it. Plus it has one of my favorite soundtracks of any movie ever.
