No. Political correctness is very much killing the movie industry. In last decade or two mid budget movies have become almost extinct, what we have left is mostly just mega budget blockbusters and shoestring budget indie movies that usually fail in some way. Huge budgets means that risking to alienate any potential customer or customer group is a big fucking no to producers. They used to make a lot of movies that could be bit edgy about something and didn't have to be apologetic about having minorities as one dimensional villains and shit.
Good movies tend to be less common than those used to be as everything is dumbed down as hell.

The thing criterion does wrong is trying fix something that isn't broken. Using old posters as cover for DVD/BR is pretty much default for publishers. That way cover stays true to movie inside and image from the time movie was done. Other acceptable way is to do minor phoshopping to change font sizes or maybe color of text. Minor changes.
