A show about deconstructing high school and high school tropes by using "vampires" and "slayers", that after a while turns into a show about a girl that fights vampires.
But what actually makes is good is the interaction between the characters (they all feel very genuine, or at least the OG-cast does), and how self-distant it is. It knows its flaws and expectations, and often makes fun of itself because of them.
I love it and rewatch it every other year.

The later seasons didn't have the cozy, innocent atmosphere to save them. The whole First arc suffers from it a lot. It's trying to be deep and grimdark but can't pull it off at all (Xander/Anya being the sole exception.)
Season 1 of Buffy is like the earlier seasons of the X Files in a teen format, and it works really well for what it does, the later seasons tried to transition to proto-Angel and mature, but failed at both, to the point where I have never been able to bring myself to watch them again.

The problem with Glory is that she's introduced as this badass who toss Buffy around like a ragdoll, and then proceeds to just sit around in her loft being waited on and not doing jack shit. Then the last few episodes roll around and the writers are all "I guess we should have her do something, huh?"
Working behind the scenes made sense for villains like The Master (magically stuck in his lair) or The Mayor (he doesn't have any superpowers until very late in the season) but not for Glory.
