I never saw this movie as a kid, but i've seen it two or three times over the last maybe 8 years.

I cannot get into this film at all. I dont find it funny one bit. It might be well written, but i'm not fan of the premise either. I've tried a couple of times to finally get what makes this movie so great, but i still cant find it.

It's not a bad film at all, but the amount of people saying it's one of the best movies ever made is astonishing.

Can somebody explain to me why this film so incredibly loved by people? I suspect most of the people who love it saw it as a kid, and loves it so much due to nostalgia.

I'm also not a big fan of the comedy of Bill Murray, could this be the reason why i dont get it?

It's a manbaby thing.

Because it's a safe bet, OP. And furthermore, it's already got a nice little fanbase cult to glom onto.
There's no 'risk' involved, there's no actual thinking involved.

You'll never need to defend Ghostbusters with any actual reason when you can just go, 'Oh, my God. You DON'T like Ghostbusters?'.

lots of people are overwhelmed by nostalgia goggles. it's only got a couple of good jokes, and even that's being pretty liberal with "good" and "jokes"

Really?

The supernatural is dealt with in a businesslike fashion without making it lose its mysterious appeal. In fact, the strong point of the movie is how seamlessly it builds from haunted house spooks to world-ending interdimensional gods and never breaks the reality of that world.
>>

This.
Granted, I really love the look of practical effects, and most 'children of the 80s' do too, but I do wonder how much of that is growing up with them. It's what I'm used to.
From what I read/people I talk to, not everyone holds them in such high regard.

Dan Akroyd is kind of a shitty actor in this, which is hilarious because he's a nutbag who actually believes in ghosts and was heavily invested in all 3 Ghostbusters movies.

Still though, whenever he does something dumb, it doesn't seem like I'm watching a dumb person do stupid things. I feels like I'm watching a friend in a bar be sarcastic about someone else do something stupid.

Does that make sense to anyone else?

It'd very difficult for older movies to stand the test of time, especially comedies.

The Godfather and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles stand the test of time, Ghostbusters does not and is NostalgiaGoggles-core.
>>
>>72062998
>If you're a 'nerd' without all the autism, women dig you.
But the word nerd almost literally means an autist

1. A foolish, inept, or unattractive person.
2. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.

What is attractive about being unattractive? What is the "good part" about being a nerd that they find appealing?

>If you're a female 'nerd', men have no standards and they'll dig you.
But men who have no standard will dig ANY WOMAN. Why waste the time to pretend to give a shit about something you clearly don't?

GB2016 looks amazing though, right?

>>
>>72060889
Bingo.

The 20-40 year old manchild crowd love it because they remember all the toys and shit from when they were kids, and they are all fans of things they liked when they were children because nothing else in their life is worth caring about.

Ask the parents of these manchildren what they think of this movie. You'll get "it was okay I guess" from 95% of them, which is the correct analysis.
>>
>>72063107
>But the word nerd almost literally means an autist
Yeah, that's the fucking point.
No one wants the fat basement fuck in a sweaty Next Gen t-shirt who can rattle off all the pants sizes of the female crew members.
They want an otherwise 'normal' person in glasses or a Star Wars shirt.
This goes for both men and women. Again, it's easier for women to pull off, but it's a standards game. Men don't have any.

>What is attractive about being unattractive? What is the "good part" about being a nerd that they find appealing?
Makes you seem quirky to them, and they get to pat themselves on the back for not dating a 'bro' or 'basic bitch'.

>But men who have no standard will dig ANY WOMAN. Why waste the time to pretend to give a shit about something you clearly don't?
Because it gets you somewhere? You can't blame them when dudes share pictures of naked chicks covered in game controllers or something.
If there's a market for it, you can't blame the supply for being there.

22 is on the young end of the scale for potential ghostbusters fans. Somebody who is 22 probably grew up seeing all the ghostbusters toys at yardsales and forgotten in the closets of older kids. Some of them may have liked the toys and got their parents to rent the VHS, but that's about it.

Which is part of the reason all this pissing and moaning is pissing me off.
Your childhood isn't ruined, it's your life that's ruined.
I could understand if this was happened ten years ago, but Jesus Christ.

I stopped complaining about remakes when I graduated high school.

Yeah true, it was a movie everyone's older siblings and parents liked but nobody my age was really that into it.
>>
>>72060843
There was a lot of passion involved and it shows. It was something new and fresh and a fun mix between spooks and comedy. The music was good, the effects were good at the time and still hold up. It's comfy as fuck and you don't have to like it.

I love the way Clash of the Titans looked, but if someone said it looked too retarded for them to watch for a whole movie's runtime, I wouldn't have much of a leg to stand on. Like it or not, if you were a kid when Ghostbusters came out, you're getting older, and what's acceptable for one generation might not be one and a half, two generations later.

I can understand the importance of Birth of a Nation, and understand why people then loved it, while still holding the opinion that white people painted black looks fucking silly.
>>
>>72063866

Ghostbusters (1984), at worst, is a solid film. And it wasn't even part of my childhood. Just watched it for the first time last week. Thoroughly entertained. It still holds up and didn't need a remake.
>>
>>72061066

Loved it as a kid, haven't seen it since. Workmate rewatched it and said it didn't age well. I'm scared to rewatch it as an adult.
>>
>>72063902
The vast majority of remakes aren't needed, and on the off chance one actually was, doesn't mean it was done in the name of quick cash and a guaranteed audience.
It's nothing new and nothing to be upset about.

>>
>>72060843
It's a genuinely brilliant movie, but in many ways it defies classification. The ghost/paranormal aspect is largely played straight, the comedy of the thing is a kind of subtle, dry, sardonic affair based on human interaction and reaction to a completely alien scenario.
>>
>>72060843

it's legitimately a piece of shit

it's basically the equivalent of capeshit in the 80s. Completely disposable drivel that maybe has a couple of funny moments, solely due to the presence of Murray. The movie has aged horribly and the only people who love it are the ones you described, people who can't understand that as they grow up, their tastes should evolve so that they do not like the same stuff as human beings with literally undeveloped brains.
>>
>>72063987
Ghostbusters (2016) was hijacked by Amy Pascal. She only cared about securing a bankable name to feature female leads in. Ivan Reitman was interested in making a legacy sequel and having both male and female leads. He was booted out of the door and the film in question became a Paul Feig film named Ghostbusters instead of a Ghostbusters film directed by Paul Feig. No one was expecting another Robocop or TMNT. GB fans have been promised a new film for years.
>>
>>72064142
Basically this

I saw it in the theater when I was 9 years old on a Friday night a couple weeks after it came out - the theater was oversold or people snuck in, so I sat in the aisle to watch it, and I wasn't the only one sitting in the aisle.

The only other movies from that time that I remember having such an impact were ET and Return of the Jedi (Jaws 3 was similar but mainly because it was 3D). Even Ray Parker Jr's theme song for the movie stayed at #1 for ages.

The "he slimed me" line, like "where's the beef," was among the ultimate 80s memes.
>>
>>72061066
I love the film, but I will admit that the matte work on the spooky doggos doesn't hold up. Most of the other FX are pretty good, and I watch it more for the characters than the monsters now.

I imagine it would be difficult to understand how this movie is so great when it barely stands out among other super natural comedies, but context matters.

In 1984 until Ghostbusters there was never a movie comedy about ghosts, ghost catchers dressed as pest control exterminators combined with massive visual effects.
Back then comedies were rather bland, or more for adults. The was no Nickelodeon channel on TV.

There wasn't anything like this until Ghostbusters came out.
>>
>>72065953

Nickelodean had been around for a long time before this came out, and there were many popular movies around this time dwelling on the same themes - Poltergeist and Nightmare on Elm Street, both being horror movies, had the same sophomoric humor as Ghostbusters.

That said, your inclusion of of Ms. Pacman negataes the misinformation of your post.
>>
>>72066200
>Poltergeist and Nightmare on Elm Street

Those weren't comedies. No, not at all the same kind of humor as Ghostbusters.
Poltergeist had some mild comedy within a family context, and Nightmare on Elm Street was a sadistic killing doing cruel things to people that was later exaggerated into humor in the sequels.
You are correct Nickelodean was around but wasn't popular. It was mostly gameshows for kids being covered in slime.
>>
>>72060843
I was born 5 years after this movie came out and I like it. It's a great comedy, something which is very rare especially lately. I can laugh just thinking of some of the jokes in ghostbusters.
>>
>>72060843
Generational thing, I guess.

I loved it as a kid.
>>
>>72067672

Do you think because you're 13 now you stopped being a kid?
>>
>>72060843
You either get the comedy or not. It was a different time.
>>
>>72060843
I feel the same way about this, Blues Brothers, Airplane, Monty Python Holy Grail, Caddyshack, and Space Balls.
>>
Everyone has different tastes.
It could be a nostalgia thing I don't know. I actually have an unhealthy obsession with this movie. Most movies I could watch once or twice and then I never want to see them again.
But I actually had to retire this movie because I watched it so many times. When I was a kid, I wore the fuck out of vhs to point where you couldn't see shit. You think you were watching scrambled porn on the pay per view channels.
I love this movie. I don't know why. But I can understand if other people don't. It's all about preference.
There's probably people who have watched Titanic 100 times and I'd smash their head in with a hammer because I utterly abhor that movie. It's a preference.
>>

Nope. Wrong.
All three had lots of special visual effects, but that is about all. Prior to Ghostbusters there weren't any comedies with so much cinematic special effects.

>Poltergeist and Nightmare on Elm Street, both being horror movies, had the same sophomoric humor as Ghostbuster

Hence, the part where I pointed out that they were horror movies, but had sophomoric humor in line with Ghostbusters.

Nickelodean, like MTV, was popular the moment it started coming in middle class households. Before it was a fixation in American households, kids had Saturday morning cartoons or niche stations like Channel 44 in San Francisco.

I don't even think we disagree, it's simply how I remember the time when I was a kid. Yes, I'm too old to be here, I know.

KBHK TV44 Cable 12!!! Their after school lineup was comfy as fuck! Sutro tower ftw!
>>
>>72068394

A great many comedies had many cinematic effects before Ghostbusters - it was extremely popular in its time, but beyond a good script and a clever marketing campaign, it was not ahead of its time.
>>
>>72069030

Got to spend my fourth birthday in San Francisco, and Channel 44 showed the Banana Splits - probably the best moment of my early lift. Also, as a 4 year old, met two members of ABBA while in SanFran, which is still surreal to me.
>>
>>72060843
Saw it as a kid, and still love it. It's not one of the best movies ever made, but it's a good family friendly movie. If you don't like Bill Murray, why would you watch it?
