Spielberg takes this weird sadistic glee in killing people. He's trying to horrify the audience and titillate at the same time, and ends up with a bizarre tone where graphic deaths are treated as punchlines.

It implicitly approves of killing POWs, and depicts violence as a write of passage into manliness

The scene with the collapsed wall is just strange, it's half a joke that isn't funny and half a real threat that is extinguished in seconds. It should have been a deleted scene

It was made in 1997 but has the politics and tact of a 1943 propaganda movie.

>>
>>72029306
>old damon

That's not Damns characters, It's Reiben. The story follows Tom Hanks character, not Damons. The old man at the beginning is remembering Hanks entire story, not just the part with Ryan. The only one to be with Miller the entire time and survive? Reiben.

I think so
>translator guy advocates letting the short haired german go
>later a different german who looks identical to the first kills his friend
>he is too much of a coward to kill the german
>captures and executes the german, and is shown as crowd cheering moment
Casting two identical looking men in the only significant German roles has a strong dehumanizing effect on them. They're all the same, and if he wasn't so moral (read cowardly) he would kill any German without hesitation.

That's really my issue with SPR overall. He tries very hard to portray war as an awful thing but makes the most rousing war film in decades, re-affirming all the myths of heroic warfare and justifying the violence because it makes men alternatively cheer and cry
>>
It's a pro-war movie disguised as an anti-war movie, with the violence and the grittiness, and was certainly groundbreaking in that regard for later films in the same vein. It's not that good of a movie though, pretty generic apart from the opening, with plot armour heroes and nonthreatening inept stormtrooper villains.

It was to show that even a peaceful man can be broken by the pain that war causes. That you call it a "cheer moment" is your personal interpretation and you wouldn't be alone in it, but I would say anyone thinking that needs to pay more attention. At the beginning of the movie we're shown prisoners being executed by Allied soldiers and it's a sobering, grim kind of moment. We're mean to judge them somewhat.

Upham's moment brings it full circle; we see the transformation of this person, not into a "real man/soldier", but into the morally grey savage that more experienced soldiers are depicted as.

In the middle of a critical invasion no commander worth their salt would risk a squad of highly trained rangers to find and rescue one low ranking grunt. They weren't even going to use him as a propaganda piece either it was literally only because the general who ordered the mission felt bad for Mrs Ryan.
>>
>>72034822
He saw that he was no threat and despised him for it. He looked down on Upham and figured he wasn't even worth shooting.
>>
>>72042854
>They weren't even going to use him as a propaganda piece either

What do you mean? He was literally going to be used for propaganda. Most likely it would've hit the news that all her sons were dead.
>>
>Steven Spielberg's 1998 exercise in Oscar-mongering is a compilation of effects and impressions from all the war movies he's ever seen, decked out with precise instructions about what to think in Robert Rodat's script and how to feel in John Williams's hokey music. There's something here for everybody—war is hell (Sam Fuller), war is father figures (Oliver Stone), war is absurd (David Lean, Stanley Kubrick), war is necessary (John Ford), war is surreal (Francis Coppola), war is exciting (Robert Aldrich), war is upsetting (all of the preceding and Lewis Milestone), war is uplifting (ditto)—and nothing that suggests an independent vision, unless you count seeing more limbs blown off than usual (the visceral opening sequence, showing Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944) or someone getting graphically shot underwater. The story is about a squad trying to find and send home a private whose three older brothers have already been killed in World War II; it's a mission ordered by General George C. Marshall (backed by the authority of Abraham Lincoln, who's backed in turn by Spielberg) and executed by Tom Hanks, a captain named John instead of Joe. It has a few pretty good action moments (including a climax straight out of the Indiana Jones trilogy), a lot of spilled guts, a few moments of drama that don't seem phony or hollow, some fairly strained period ambience, and a bit of sentimental morphing that reminds me of Forrest Gump; it also lasts the better part of three hours. With Tom Sizemore, Matt Damon, Edward Burns, Jeremy Davies, Vin Diesel, Adam Goldberg, and Barry Pepper. R.
>>
>>72042911
You can't possible know that in the context of the movie. All the movie shows is the general who ordered the mission doing so because he sympathised for Mrs Ryan and when the squad asks why they're looking for Ryan, Miller answering that it's so that Mrs Ryan doesn't lose all of her sons.

In terms of realpolitik this would probably occur but not once is it suggested throughout the film.
>>
>>72042968
Just saying there'd be reasons for people to order a mission such as that, wether they explicitly say it in the movie or not is irrelevant to me desu.

I think a lot of things like that are done with people in command knowing the subtext but outwardly saying it's for this other reason instead.

Kind of like when a general knows deep down they're invading some country for a specific resource but gives a heartwarming speech about democracy and such to an army who inwardly know it's for that resource. But no one will say it out loud.

>>
>>72043095
I would agree with you in any other circumstance, but there's literally no other indication in the film that the general has ulterior motives for issuing this mission.

It's a real shame too, actually, as it would have made a great tragedy out of Miller and his squad's sacrifice if they genuinely thought they were doing this to help Ryan and his mother and it turned out it was just to use Ryan as the subject for a feel good story in the papers.

You know it is clearly said in the movie that it's a "public relations mission" which pretty much means propaganda when it comes to war.
>>
>>72043625
>Captain Miller: You and I are taking a squad over to Neuville on a public relations mission.
>Sergeant Horvath: What, you leading a squad?
>Captain Miller: Some private in the 101st lost three brothers and he's got a ticket home.

>Private Jackson: Sir... I have an opinion on this matter.
>Captain Miller: Well, by all means, share it with the squad.
>Private Jackson: Well, from my way of thinking, sir, this entire mission is a serious misallocation of valuable military resources.
>Captain Miller: Yeah. Go on.

This.

They aknowledge its a shit propaganda mission many times in the movie and everyone complains even after meeting Ryan.
