I haven't seen a single episode of The X-Files. Does it still hold up?
>>
>>72011356
it does
combines comfy and creepy in a perfect manner
>>
>>72011356
Most of it, yes.
>>
It's still definitive nineties and cheesy as ever. rewatched the series before the mini revival but really I like both of those things and it made it enjoyable.

If you want there are definitive skip/watch episodes lists as some of the monster of the week episodes are admittedly not that good. Also don't believe the Vince Gilligan lie. Seasons 2 and 3 are the best ones. 4-8 have it's ups and downs and 9 is as bad as everyone says
>>
>>72011356
Yes it's extremely good but expect the later seasons and main storyline to be shit.
>>
No, it's godawful and formulaic.
If you've seen one episode, you saw them all.
I don't know who's worse, a dumb annoying redhead who only has one facial expression or Duchovny trying to be charismatic despite having no charisma whatsoever.
>>
No, it really lacks the diversity that is incredibly vital to modern audiences.

Some episodes aren't as good as others, but yeah, its a great series and worth watching, the passage of time has not diminished that fact.

the only season i don't think holds up well is the first season. it has an extremely early 90s look to it, the hair, the clothes, the way it's filmed. the stories are good though and it's comfy as hell once you get into it.

season 2 is a bit better, by season 3 that cheesy early 90s stuff is mostly gone.

Dude prepare yourself for the best binge watch experience. Don't listen to the pricks who say MoTW are the worst/skippable. Those are the most comfy and great ones. The Alien mythology arc doesn't really go anywhere but it has some great episodes like Anasazi.

You can also listen to the Podcast of Kumail Najiani. He revisited the show and has covered the first seasons http://www.feralaudio.com/show/x-files-files/ he's been a great fan of the show and one of the reasons it was revived.

Best episodes: Post-modern Prometheus, Quagmire and Ice.
>>
The best thing about the show is listening to Scully and Mulder's conversations.
>that episode where they're stuck on a rock, talking about Moby Dick and shit

the myth arc is pretty good up until season 5

Not sure if bait.

Yes it created it's own unique formula, but then frequently played around with it's own tropes. Go back and watch any of the Darin Morgan episodes.
>>
>>72011767

He only gets one episode devoted to him, which is great. Then there's one where he takes a road trip with Scully, which is okay. Then he's either just in the background or is in mytharc episodes, and most of those are garbage.

Some episodes yes, others no.

There should be a definitive guide on which X-Files episodes you should watch and which you can skip, but if there is I'm not aware of it.
>>
>>72021356

You should watch all of them, then go look at a guide to remember/decided which one's are worth rewatching.

Skipping episodes in a show you're watching for the first time is retarded.

I would rather recommend a random persons rankings of each episode where they give a brief synopsis so you can remember what each episode is about.

This is the one I've been using: https://www.thrillist.com/entertainment/nation/the-x-files-episodes-all-201-episodes-ranked

I don't agree with everything, but all 4 Darin Morgan episodes are in the top 15, which pretty much makes it better than any other list I've found.
>>
>>72024861
That is a great list. It's an accurate representation of my impressions of most episodes.

I'm sort of torn on it. I made it to season 3, and the good episodes are great, but there's like a 2:1 ratio at best of mediocre to good episodes. Even the good ones largely stick to a formula, and the show has a tendency to be monotonously downbeat

The myth episodes are generally hype but also follow a formula (Mulder finds a clue, gets close, gets beat up, is back where he started) that isn't satisfying even before you know it doesn't go anywhere
>>
>>72026928

He was intended to be but the writers liked watching fans argue about it on message boards so they dropped hints but never made it explicit

But his entire life is devoid of people, and the only times people actually interact with him is under official circumstances where it's his investigative skills that make people tolerate him, or when he's the only one who's willing to believe them. Scully's the one that actually makes friends while Mulder is an un-charismatic fool who starts spouting goofball theories straight away without being able to gauge how those theories will be received by the people around him, or he starts bugging out whenever stuck interacting with "boring" people. The only time he's shown as "charismatic" is in how women will sleep with him, but that's pretty much always down to his looks.

The closest thing I can think of is in "Drive", when Cranston says something like, "Mulder, is that some kind of a Jew name?" And Duchovny kind of just gives him the cold shoulder without answering, which could obviously of just been him not wanting to even engage with a redneck bigot.

Fair enough. It's certainly better than anything from season 10 (aside from were-monster, obviously).

Why is Darin Morgan the only dude who can write a good script nowadays?
>>
>>72032664

I'm not a big enough fan to know anything really about the writer's personal lives, but I always thought of Darin Morgan as a Brian Wilson type figure who had some serious mental issues that prevented him from working more. He wrote the best episodes of the entire show, was the only writer to win an Emmy, so there must be something wrong with him that didn't allow him to work more (and his episodes are all pretty morbid and existential).

I love how much Morgan seems to hate Mulder. He's constantly made to seem like a foolish, obsessed ass in every Morgan episode

I think it's more that he just doesn't care enough to write more. He says what he needs to and moves on, and that's what separates him from other writers who just emulate other ideas and formulas to varying degrees of success.

And really, after Jose Chung what more could he say on the series?

Jose Chung was definitely the most meta the show ever got, and were-monster was basically a love letter to the fans. But then again, Vince Gilligan had a unique voice and a great run on the show, also playing around with the tropes and mixing comedy with perfect X-Files creepiness, and I think he wrote something like one out of every 6 episodes.

dogget was great because he was a good cop, and since scully was starting to lean over on mulder's side of the fence (and reyes was quite simply retarded), he took over the skeptic role. however, since he wasn't tasked with debunking the work but simply investigating it, he could still just act like a cop.

plus, compared to the other characters (oxford educated profiling wizard; medical degree; batshit crazy), dogget was a regular joe that became an avatar for normal people watching the show.
