What Lovecraft story would make the best movie?
>>
>>71984506
The one about the squid.
>>
The transition of juan romero

would probably tank because people would get the wrong idea from the title
>>
Rats in the Walls is my personal favorite

I don't like the too cosmic stuff. Lovecraft has some good stories that are just about cults, ruins, and madness.
>>
The Colour Out of Space
>>
>>71984597
>I don't like the too cosmic stuff

cosmic stuff is good on paper, but would be shit on screen

Like Color of Space would be impossible to do a visual adaption of at all despite being a great story
>>
>>71984633
Frankly it's about as good as it gets. It's the origin story for the rest.
>>
>>71984633
What is that one about? I think I tried to read it and didn't like it. Was it about a meteor that started changing colors or something?
>>
>>71984597
They all tie to the cosmic stuff.
>>
>>71984506
The one about the unspeakable horror, incomprehensible fear and non-euclidean structures...
>>
Movie: Shadow Over Innsmouth, which has already been adapted into the best Lovecraft movie: Dagon. However it could've been much better with a slower more atmospheric build up.

TV Series: The Color out of Space. You could also keep going past the story, since it sets itself up to continue.
>>
I would love to see a movie about Yig

Why is there a thread like this every day? Is ancient overrated pulp trash all you read?
>>
>>71984734
The dagon movie was bretty ok, especially for how small the budget was
>>
none because the entire thing that makes him scary is what the reader imagines in their own head with his detailed but also vague descriptions of stuff.
>>
>>71984827
> the entire thing that makes him scary is what the reader imagines in their own head

so exactly like the best horror movies then?

The king in yellow did the cosmic horror better than lovecraft, the hack. He should have left it alone
>>
>>71985000
nice meme but I doubt you've actually read The King in Yellow. it's pretty boring

I did read yellow. It is boring once they stop focusing on the king but the cosmic horror aspect is much better than anything I've read in lovecraft

Maybe people like it?

Lovecraft doesn't really translate well to visual mediums.

My favourite Lovecraft story is the Music of Erich Zann though.
>>

>Lovecraft has some good stories that are just about cults, ruins, and madness.

This. That's why I think an adaptation of Call of Cthulu would work pretty well. It's just about a guy tracking down traces of cult activity and eventually finding where it comes from. Mountains of Madness would work well, too, since it's just about a group of explorers that stumble into a fucked up old temple.

I think Haunter of the Dark would work
>>
>>71985514
that, rats in the walls and the hound should be mandatory reading
>>
>The mountains of madness
>The temple (spooky stuff is mostly offscreen or implied, that which is seen is through a scientific lens)
>The thing on the doorstep (the spookiest thing actually show is a reanimated corpse)
>Whisperer in darkness (crab people and lobotomized corpse puppets)
Theres just a few that don't really feature any weird colors or "alien geometries" or "indescribable horrors" that /tv/ thinks are so impossible to adapt.

It's not that the horrors are indescribable, it's because what you come up with in your mind will always be more fucked up than whatever they put on screen so it won't have the same impact.

Clive Barker would be a pretty good guy to have on a Lovecraft project.

This is straight out of Lovecraft.

At the Mountains of Madness could work. Alien and The Thing already owe a lot to it.
>>
Shadow over Innsmouth isn't predicated on the notion of horror being indescribable and inscrutable, but it's essentially an anti-miscegenation allegory, so I doubt it has any shot in today's Hollywood. It's also likely too slow/cerebral for most audiences.
>>
Would like to see a shadow out of time adaptation

I always loved the Hellraiser's surrealistic version of hell. No fire and brimstone, just cold and darkness.
>>
>>71986931
To be fair, it isn't verified as actually being Hell. All we really know for sure is that Leviathan in Hebrew is another name for the devil but this Leviathan isn't verified as being the devil since it is referred to as a god of desire and flesh.

This was a pretty good modern take on "From Beyond". It's not really a Lovecraft movie, but it's definitely heavily influenced by it. They even audibly refer to From Beyond in the movie after observing their situation. It also has this weird Hunter S. Thompson character in it for some reason.

For what it's worth they actually have hell in the Scarlet Gospels which is a novel about Pinhead.

Shame it's a terrible fanwank of a book with some terrible moments in it.

>oh no we're stuck in a desert dragging a corpse
>oh look a limo is slowing down to give us a lift because that's what you do when you see people in the desert dragging a body
>oh look it's owned by a biggoted evangelical preacher who condemns us all for being LGBT, we get to have a badass moment where we put him in his place

That's not even the most stupid thing in the book.

Dream-quest of unknown Kaddath mini-series (animated like pic relatef would work damn well too)
For the horror movie I'd suggest sime mix of the Cthulhu cycle Dunwich, Innsmouth, Call of Cthulhu. I never had a very unsettling feeling after ONE Lovecraft's novel but after reading many. If someone could combine the aspects of some or improve one of them so the cosmic horror would be more striking and less subtle, it would be amazing.
>>
>>71986400

I could imagine Barker doing a Lovecraftian story.

"and from the unspeakable depths came a mind older than time, with knowledge beyond worlds that filled every living soul with a blasphemous terror. And it had a giant throbbing erection"
>>
At the Mountains of Madness.

It would be an hour of describing machinery, 20 minutes of flying around in a blizzard, then 4 hours of describing engravings on a wall.

Am I the only one who thinks Del Toro isn't actually all that great at directing horror? The man can work his way around a monster but I don't think I can recall a single instance where I have felt any kind of tension from his movies.

None. Lovecraft is overrated, his stories rely on telling rather than showing and extraneous use of adjectives. His works have no compelling plot or narrative, they're just trying to "spook" you, and thus can't be adapted successfully to film. But I suppose 16 year olds who listen to Cradle of Filth and who have just discovered him buy the meme that his works are really spooky and scary.
