In Ireland, the shopkeeper gave the rich customers preferential treatment and looked down on everyone else, even treating them with disdain. In Brooklyn, the shopkeeper told her to treat every single customer equally, like a new friend.
In Ireland, Jim Farrell claimed he wanted more out of life, but in reality he was--like everyone around him--likely going to remain in that small town, with the upper middle class life that was literally handed to him from his parents who, in all likelihood, were handed it by their parents. In Brooklyn, Tony and his family are poor but are shown as actively taking the steps to improve their lot in life by starting a business and making sure the next generation, Frankie, goes to college.
In Ireland, everyone butts into Eilis life in a demanding, overbearing way. Everyone talks over Eilis when she says she's returning to America in a month, basically dismissing her thoughts and opinions about her life and pushing her into what they want her to do because it's convenient for them. Everything she does is scrutinized. In Brooklyn, if people butt into Eilis life, it's to help her improve or offer advice--you should wear this, take some classes. And as the lady on the boat said, it's nice to live somewhere where everyone doesn't know your auntie. So while they gossip in Brooklyn, it's not the same type of gossip that effects people in a small town.
