No, the nugget didn't. Scrooge had grown bitter and coldhearted over the years of fruitless hardships and constant disappointments and betrayals. The money he made was meaningless in the end, but after spending most of his life to get it, he couldn't stop so increasing his wealth just became his entire life.
I got to read this comic for the first time earlier this year. It's the best comic i've read in a long long time.
