Just finished this. I didn't really know what he was thinking at the end.Was he genuinely happy and at peace with himself and all that he's done? Or was that smile the stroke of genius that led to the coke ad? Or both?
I also started to feel bad forMegan, but then I'd start to remember that she was using Don since the start
One of the few shows that left me feeling a little disoriented at the ending. Just sat there for a few minutes and felt sad that it was over
>>71923930
>I truly was a Mad Man all along. And I finally understand...that's OK.
I don't know how they could've made it any fucking clearer for you, OP
>>71924004
I've watched the first few episodes of the last season and have been underwhelmed. Does it get better?
>>71924085
I felt it got better. I watched all everything up until the ending of season 5 years ago when it was first airing, and I didn't like the show that much. Started again since I was bored and the latter half of season 7 was awesome, in my opinion. The characters really reached where they needed to go
>>71923930
Oh man do I miss /SC&P/
Those were the days, you missed out on some great live threads OP
>>71923930
my two ways of looking at it are either:
-yes he gets the stroke of genius sitting there meditating and goes back to New York to do the Coke ad
or
-that the world still goes on without Don there and he has found peace in himself, somebody else came up with the Coke advert and what we're supposed to realise is that Don's inner peace and happiness is what he was truly striving for, and he found that rather than letting his work define him
I dunno though, i like the ambiguity and whenever I come on here to try and talk about what I think someone always comes along and makes me feel like an idiot for not getting it and lays it out much clearer but I've been thinking about it recently and I can't decide which side I lean to more
ditto about how the ending made me feel, I just sat there and let it soak in for quite a while - much like the Sopranos
>>71924213
>tfw you never got to take part in Mad Men live threads
being a yuropoor really is a fate worse than death
SC&P was the best general, so many good memes, screengrabs, qts and most importantly top notch discussion
I fucking miss mad men so much ;_;
>>71924191
That's encouraging. I thought season six was really good but something just seems off right now. Also, Peggy is being a total bitch.
I think it's both. He was at peace with himself and throughout all the struggles and strife we saw him endure, his brilliance as an ad man was the only constant. He just realized an ad man is who he is.
>>71924313
there will never be another Mad Men
Best/Worst characters?
My best would be Don and Roger. Worst would be Joan, in my opinion. I just felt that she was never important at all. She was just there as a plot device for Roger
>>71924506
Bobby was pretty shit. I don't know if they couldn't think of anything for him to do or if his actor was so shit they just decided to ignore him
>>71924506
>worst
>not Bob Benson
>>71923930
I am of the minority opinion that Don found inner peace at the retreat but did NOT make the Coke ad, and rather that's the way the show chose to portray Don's sense of inner peace to the viewer.
That being said, the most emotionally powerful part of the finale for me was Don's final phone conversation with Birdie
>>71924506
Done, Roger, Pete, Burt, Harry, Saul and Ginsburg are all GOAT characters.
The kids, including Sally, could've been a lot better, Joan is definitely a strong candidate for weakest character, Peggy was great throughout but had a terrible contrived ending, Ted was pretty shit, the guy who was Ted's partner was totally underdeveloped, Megan left a lot to be desired, and the Diane character or whatever (the waitress) was a shitty red herring of an ending plot device.
>posting in /SC&P/ while playing this https://youtu.be/zDBzD9YtKC8?t=162
>>71924632
Bob Benson was one of the best late-season characters
>>71923930
It was both. He came back fulfilled and did the coke ad
>>71924506
I agree with Joan being the worst. She was just there to supply some strange mix of eye candy and muh feminism.
>>71924632
I'd say Joan was worse, to be honest. She was one of the biggest parts of the show for some reason, even though her plotlines were shit and the hardest thing she had to do waslose some of her dignity, but who cares she gets rich as shit and she doesn't seem to remember how she got there
For being on the the main things about the show, Joan never really contributed anything but useless airtime, and I was never interested in what happened to her at all. Just made me mad that I had to wait through her boring shit just to get to Don
He had the lighbulb go off in his mind and did the coke ad.
>>71923930
It wasn't an ending, there was no bigger tie-up to any of the story lines than there was in any previous season finale. It just...... stopped.
And unless someone specifically says out loud, "Don created the Coke ad," then it's a non-sequitir. No he fucking didn't, There was nothing leading up to that moment to indicate he would ever go back to that job.
>>71924919
Except for the scene immediately after, you know - the actual fucking coke ad.
they should have tied it more clearly to the coke ad, because its easy to just assume they are unconnected, thats what I thought at first viewing
just have him look right at the product placement
for american audiences
>>71923930
>Or was that smile the stroke of genius that led to the coke ad?
If they were smart they would've turned it into the start of the marketization of all the "new age" health and lifestyle. The 70's was ripe with all kinds of bullshit. Including the anti-corporate movement which sold the same bullshit just repackaged.
>>71924506
The worst character is Paul Kinsey.
>>71924919
Weiner more or less confirmed it was meant to imply that Don wrote the ad.
>>71924506
Best: Don, Roger, Lane, Pete, or pre-move Peggy
Worst: Harry, Megan, Bobby, or Ginsberg
>>71924085
7a or 7b?
Either way the answer is yes
>>71924506
Can't pick a best character, there are way too many candidates
Worst is unquestionably Glen
>>71926287
How the fuck could you hate Glen?
>>71926590
Glen was a faggot once he grew up. I thought his arc with Betty was good though.
>>71926643
I always thought betty was going to get busy with him. She practically wet herself seeing him as an adult.
>>71926590
The actor was pretty bad and he wasn't meant to be anywhere near as creepy as he came off as
Objective facts about the show:
>Pete was the best character
>Peggy and Betty were the worst
>scoobysoubisou was more awkward than hot
>the ending sucked
>>71923930
>sc&p is gone
>endless capeshit threads

>>71923930
My favorite show is Sopranos, I feel like this is a good thread to ask if this show is good to watch if that's my all time favorite.
>>71927502
fuck, forgot pic
>>71927459
only watched season 1, hated it and never watched it againhopefully SS will make /tv/ great again. Also /pol/ has the best memes, so hopefully Cleveland has some fun stuff happen
>>71927436
Really liked her and Pete's storyline at the end of the show
>>71927436
You already did.
>>71927517
If you liked the Sopranos you'll probably like Mad Men too
>best character
>not stan
>>71927436
Not sure if he really counts as a side character
>>71927502
He killed 18 men on Okinawa. How can you hate him?
>>71927623
I'd be inclined to agree with you. Even Don liked him
He had been running from Don and embracing Dick. He felt he had to. He realized in that moment, "Fuck it. I am Don Draper, ad man, and i've got a great fucking idea."
>ywn see Pete's mile high antics with business and celebrity luminaries of the 1970s with guest appearances by drunk Uncle Duck.
>>71927517
Matthew Weiner was a writer on Sopranos, and he was basically the show runner for Mad Men. Both shows have tremendous character depth and natural, well written dialogue.
They are obviously different shows that deal with vastly different subject matter. (also one is on HBO and the other on basic cable) But, they are two of the greatest American tv shows and they both deserve all the praise they get
>>71927436
>>71927646
Fun fact, he is pic related

Yes, they're both the greatest, Mad Men functions as a continuation to some extent. Similar themes of masculinity, how to be a father and husband, one's station in life, etc.

That game had so much potential.
It was Rockstar's Heavy Rain
>>71927961
I'm not much of a gamer but I liked it. Not perfect but pretty interesting/different. Amazing miss-en-scene, really artful.
>>71927961
I liked it but, its story was a massive letdown from everything else it had going for it(setting, tone, characters, music, etc.)
>>71923930
I think he found connection in the realization that just about everybody on the planet is lonely and needs to be loved, just like him. When that guy shares his story about the refrigerator and how fucking scared and isolated and mediocre he is, Don understands better than he's understood anything else in his entire life. And consumerism, even though it's often empty, lazy, cheap, and ephemeral, and even though it can't replace human love, can sometimes reflect this desire for connection in a truly beautiful and meaningful way. There can be a shared and touching experience in fast food chains and soda commercials. Through representations of human need for connection, humans can connect, and that's valuable.
