If you saw the theatrical version (or the televised version), you'd understand why. The Director's cut fixed a lot of things. It still isn't a great movie, but it went from being bad to decent. It also gets overshadowed by 2, 4, and 6, and memers want to keep pushing the odd/even meme.

TNG season 6 starts off pretty bad, gets good in the middle, then ends on the worst Borg episode in history.
TNG season 7 is when most of the good writers left for DS9 (where the second season was miles better than the first), and the only writers left threw around ideas like "What if Geordi met his mom? What if Data met his mom? What if Worf met his brother? What if Crusher fucked a ghost?". All Good Things is the GOAT of all GOAT finales, and somewhat makes up for a very meh season.
DS9 season 6 has the amazing DS9 occupation arc, but falls apart once it ends and becomes boring filler until the last episode.
DS9 season 7 tries to end the show while also introducing a new cast member, but I believe they found a way to balance the two in a kind of soft reboot of the show. However, they ruin Dukat in his crazy ass psycho revenge story, where for the second time in his life, he literally did something wrong.
VOY season 6 is where the writers completely stopped caring about intra-episode continuity and made it diet TNG. Equinox pt. 2 is the official turning point for the rest of the show.
VOY season 7 is bored ass writers just waiting for the show to end, and when it does, it's on a whimper rather than a bang. Bravo UPN.

The only trek things I've watched I didn't like was the entirety of voyager and the last two TNG movies.
Generations might be shit but the section with kirk chopping wood in his comfy log cabin is better than nemesis and insurrection combined.

In the episode The Crossing, non-corporeal beings are trying to save themselves from their dying ship by taking over the bodies of the enterprise crew, but they don't cause any harm whatsoever, and at the end Archer destroys their ship, which contained hundreds of those beings, nearly all of which were entirely innocent and hadn't even touched a member of the crew.
I mean, he didn't even entertain the idea of communicating with them. Just straight up slaughtered hundreds of sentient beings without a second thought.
Galaxy Quest is the best ST movie.
