What people don't realise is that this movie is actually based on a short story written in the 60's by the famous writer, Ted Hughes (Husband of Sylvia Plath). He said the book (and by extension the movie) was about two things.
1. The enlistment of young men into the military in times of war, making them monsters and killing machines against their will when they have no wishes to be killers or soldiers.
2. The importance of the father/son relationship. Hogarths father is non existent in the story, it's never explained what happened to him, he's just absent. The giant is a surrogate father for Hogarth, that's why their bond is so immediate, the giant is the father figure he never had.
So given this, it's pretty apparent why women seem to care very little for this movie, but grown men are moved to tears by it.

In the case of Hogarth and the Iron Giant, they are both lonely outcasts, who spend enough time with each other and teach each other enough about the world to form a meaningful relationship with each other. It's only in the last four years that I've finally met women who I've had good experiences with and actually make me feel like a person for once.
But the twenty-plus years before was a constant series of terrible people, one after another, all women. A mom who, even when I was toddler, liked to discipline you with her hands around your neck. An aunt who smoked several packs a day, and occasionally put them out in you. And then we move to outside the family and talk about ex-girlfriends. A couple of exes who'd beat the shit out of me over fits of rage. Another would go off and cheat on me unless I was being a flat out asshole to her (I beat her a few times). There were also the teachers from elementary to high school who'd constantly berate and yell at us and strip us down in front everyone else in class. I'm aware kids are a handful, but I'm still shocked they could away with that back then. And finally, when my brother's ex-girlfriend poisoned his dog as a means of getting back at him. Again, and I shit you not, every single one of these examples I've given were all women.
Granted, the last four years of support groups (I'm so emotionally fucked up these days my doctor got me on SSI), I finally met some girls who are the complete opposite of the cunts I described above. Ladies who are very comforting, encouraging, patient, and accepting even on my worst days. They actually helped renewed my faith in women. But obviously some of us just aren't lucky. And when someone's constantly subjected to some pretty terrible shit from the same group of people one after another, be it gender or race, it's hard not to have hatred be their gut reaction to them.
