I dunno, buddy cop movies rely on the chemistry between the two leads and the last few recent buddy cop movies have been severely lacking to say the least. Perhaps people were unsure if Gosling and Crowe would make it work this time around.
I personally loved it, and while I liked all the performances, Gosling completely made the movie for me.

Nah, it's just not in style anymore. Also for me, I don't like movies set in LA cause they always feel a little masturbatory and insular.
