Who here ordered the extended editions on sale yesterday? I've never owned all of them before and only have theatrical on blu ray
I heard interesting things about the transfers; some say that the theatrical versions have bad BD transfers yet others say that the extended editions are subject to too much color grading
I guess I'll find out

End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it.

White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.

It was important to the theme of how war changes one permanently and unavoidably. The hobbits all believed that they were about to put the whole mess behind them when they went home, but that's not possible. Remember, Tolkien was a WWI vet and saw most of his childhood friends die at the Somme.

On the other hand, though, it would have been tough to stick it in the movie because there really were a lot of endings. I'm glad they left in the journey to west in, because it conveys the point similarly and more iconically, although only for Frodo.
>>
>>71770690

Where once was love
Love is no more

Don't say -- goodbye

For all the lies
You told us
The hurt, the blame!

And we will weep
To be so alone
We are lost!
We can never go home

So in the end
I will be -- what I will be
No loyal friend
Was ever there for me

Now we say -- goodbye
We say -- you didn't try...

These tears you cry
Have come too late
Take back the lies
The hurt, the blame!

And you will weep
When you face the end alone
You are lost!
You can never go home

>>
>>71771648
The thing about the Scouring is that there really is a lot of it, as it is in the books. If they didn't do the whole thing it would feel very tacked on, in a footnote kind of way, and it would be weird. In order to film the Scouring properly, you would need scenes for
>hobbits arriving in Hobbiton to suspicious circumstances, thuggish men everywhere and hobbits oppressed, the mayor is missing
>newly-swole Merry & Pippin convincing hobbits that they can be rid of the men if they resist, launch guerilla warfare campaign against them
>action scene of the Battle of Bywater, where Merry leads a band of ruffians into a trap filled with dozens of concealed hobbit archers
>arriving at Bag-End, discovery of Saruman
>dialogue scene between Frodo & Saruman & Grima: Grima kills Saruman and is slain by hobbit archers
Anything less would be seriously incomplete. I have no idea how you would be able to condense all of that into a scene.

it's still a valid question. Gandalf and the Witch King were ready to throw down right before Rohan's arrival. While Gandalf has the potential to be more "powerful" he was limited by his "human form" and mission to only help the people of ME, while Witch-King was said to be pretty much unkillable barring a barrow blade.

>>
>>71772964
then how did he die so easily? I mean getting stabbed in the face is kinda hard to walk off but still
>>
>>71773368
Yeah. In the first movie when the dwarves are telling the story of how Smaug attacked Erebor there's a shot of him walking with a quadrupedal gait (including his forelegs) but then he got Lucas'd in the next two and the subsequent home video releases because WETA thought he would be more menacing if he moved like a bat.

People were really pissed because he not only is described as having four legs in the book itself but Tolkein himself drew Smaug as a traditional four-legged dragon and every illustration of him in pretty much every illustration of the Hobbit has had him as a four-legged dragon. It was the epitome of "the source material wasn't cool and contemporary enough so we changed it to make money" and caught a lot of flak.
>>
>>71773958
>and caught a lot of flak.
Only with autists. Most media considers Smaug the best dragon ever brougt to screen and one of the few good things about the Hobbit trilogy.
>>
>>71773396
Merry's sword was literally enchanted to be able to bind wraiths to the mortal world. His stab made the WK basically mortal, then Eowyn finished him off. Gandalf didn't have a sword like that, so it's unlikely he would be able to use it to damage the WK. He did have fire though, which might have at least made him fuck off for a while. But if WK got one good stab in Gandalf would be finished.

So in other words, the only people who care about the movie for more than a week after seeing it.

>Most media considers Smaug the best dragon ever brougt to screen and one of the few good things about the Hobbit trilogy.
Even the autists agree with that, they're just mad because not only could it have been better and more faithful to the source material, it actually WAS before it was changed. It's like ordering a steak in a restaurant and then just before the waitress sets it down on your table she takes it back to the kitchen and has them put it back on the grill until it's well-done and cover it in A1. You still get your steak, but it's a sad shadow of what it could have been.
>>
>>71774555
>sword was literally enchanted to be able to bind wraiths to the mortal world

Gee, that's quite a specific quality for a sword. Are there so many wraiths around that you can just stumble into a sword that is bewitched to kill them? you'd think someone like Aragorn or Gandald will try to find a sword like this.
>>
>>71775961
>Gee, that's quite a specific quality for a sword.
Well, yeah. It was literally made for the sole purpose of killing the men of Angmar and the Witch-King was the king of Angmar when he was alive. That sword was literally made to kill him and his kin.
>>
>>71771984
winging it so hard didn't even know if smaug had 2 or 4 legs 1 year before the 2nd movies release.

FUCK SAKE HACKSON. LEARN TO SAY NO
>>
>>71776055
So why didn't Aragorn or Gandalf tried finding/enchanting those swords? was it also something that Gandalf was forbidden to do?
>>
>>71775786
It wasn't.
>>
>>71776104
Because the civilization that made them died out thousands of years ago, they both have famous magic swords anyway and any that are left are probably guarded by Barrow-Wights.
>>
>>71776888
adding to this, the swords the Hobbit's were given by Tom Bombadil after the Barrow-Wights were basically daggers or dirks to men. Also, Gandalf specifically defended Merry and Pippin's joining the company against Elrond, so maybe he thought the barrow-blades would be useful later on.

Actually, if I remember correctly, Merry actually received that sword in the first place from Tom Bombadil. We shouldn't assume that such a weapon would be easily acquired even by the likes of Gandalf.

>Actually, if I remember correctly, Merry actually received that sword in the first place from Tom Bombadil. We shouldn't assume that such a weapon would be easily acquired even by the likes of Gandalf.

IIRC he found it in the barrows (tombs). Gandalf, Elrond or even Aragorn could have possibly known where those old kings/warriors with wraith-killing blades are buried.

Arnor.gif
75 KB, 400x335
Merrys sword was an old sword from Arnor, the Barrows being a tomb of old Arnor nobility.

Arnor was the realm that the Witch King of Angmar (Angmar is was kingdom north of Arnor) destroyed. And when the prophesy "No man can kill me" was made.

Merry's sword wounded him, because at the might of his power and terror he was struck with a weapon made by the people who he had vanquished.

It's symbolic. And the idea that the Witch king could not have been killed is debatable.

And also, Eowyn probably didn't kill him. She just wounded him so badly he couldn't sustain his physical form and had to flee to Mordor to regain his strength. He wasn't able to regain before the ring was destroyed (thus disempowering all the wraiths)
>>
>>71777167
