Rey's original name was Kira and Finn was called Sam. Kira had the same background only that in the middle of the film she was supposed to team up with Luke. The writers felt that having Luke in the story was gonna overshadowed the new characters so they wrote him out until the end.

It's not canon any more but a lot of the old Legends stuff made it clear that the Sith were using a corruption of the force rather than just another aspect of it. 'Balance' by this metric would mean only Jedi, but a theme throughout the prequels and TCW is that the old Jedi order was so far up its own ass that it pretty much needed to be purged anyway.
