Terrible screenwriting in both movies but especially 2, and from the sound of it the third movie would have been even worse. Plus everyone involved seemed to think they should be competing with the Raimi movies instead of make their own thing. Because of this several groan worthy scenes were added which weren't really needed with the new direction they were taking the story.
