Thoughts? Was the Joker right? Are people all hypocrites, motivated purely by self interest?

We all have base, animal urges lying just underneath the coat of civility we wear every day. Yet, there are still great examples of self-sacrifice in the world today, and I don't think that just because people all have to wrestle with their base urges, that makes them somehow hypocritical.
I think TDK left the answer to the question open.
If you think about it, the Joker was indeed right. Sure, in the end the boats didn't blow each other up, but on both of them the majority of people were willing to turn on each other and blow up the other boat to survive. In the end only individual occurences of cowardice and bravery on different boats stood in the way of Joker's plan. So yeah, he was definitely right about the majority of people.

So fucking true.

More likely only one boat would have blown up.
in real life an official or cop on the ferry would take the detonator and put it someplace secure
The last Nolan film absolutely proves the Joker right, at least in that universe. As soon as "Bane" takes over the city and hands it over to the people, you can see that the ones ripping the rich and powerful from their homes and such are not prisoners and general ne'er-do-wells, but regular people. It's like Joker said, when the chips are down, these civilized people will eat each other. And they did.

Humans didn't live in packs before we became agricultural societies. People are pretty good at getting along in groups.
