It's actually the most pleb tier episode of The Sopranos. If you watch that amazing accomplishment of a TV show and come away thinking "LEL PINE BARRENS WAS SO EPIN AND FUNNY LIKE IN BRUGES AND MY KEKOLDTINO FLICKS" then you would have been better off just watching Breaking Bad.

Pine Barrens represents everything that held back the sopranos artistically. Don't get me wrong, the show is incredible, but it's DESPITE the parts of the show like this episode, only thrown in to keep the "entertainment" crowd engaged. Thank god we got Mad Men. That's the real evolution of artistry of The Sopranos but this time without the obligatory Pine Barrens esque "entertainment" shit.

>>
>>71712988
They're the two greatest works of American televison with Deadwood in number 3. I wouldn't call Mad Men BETTER necessarily but it's certainly less hamstrung by the obligation to appease plebs, but that just speaks to the freedoms of the television landscape now compared to 15 years ago. It's a definite evolution, but choosing between the two just depends on whether you put more value on doing it first or being more refined in your execution.
>>
>>71711518
>it's a Mad Meme is good episode
>>
>>71715329
Since you're somebody unsophisticated enough to think that Mad Man isn't good then I can comfortably tell you that the show is superior to anything you have ever been equipped to enjoy.

I know you love your Breaking Bad, and your based comfy fargo and true detective, but those shows are the infant leagues compared to Mad Men. Maybe you accidentally enjoyed the sopranos for the wrong, superficial, reasons, what was actually good about the show was going over your head, just like Mad Men did.

I think Pine Barrens is a great introductory episode to Sopranos if you want someone to try it.
It's punchy, moves at a good place, has a mix of tension and comedy and is pretty well self contained.
It's a strong episode, don't know about best though.
>>
mad men is dead and soon to be forgotten. same with breaking bad.

sopranos lives on.

there's a reason for that.
>>
Sopranos best episodes by season

S1 - Pax Soprana , College
S2 - Funhouse, From Where to Eternity, House Arrest
S3 - Armour Fou, Fortunate Son, Pine Barrens
S4 - Whitecaps / The strong silent type
S5 - Test Dream, Long Term Parking
S6A- Join The Club / Mayham (I count them as a 2 hr episode), The Ride
S6B - Walk Like a Man, Kennedy and Heidi, Second Coming, Blue Comet, Made In America

6B is without a doubt the GOAT season of TV and will NEVER be topped.

Have I displeased You, You feckless thug? 3.8 million new jobs, that wasn't good? Bailed out Mexico. Increased foreign trade. Thirty million new acres of land for conservation. Put Mendoza on the bench. We're not fighting a war. I've raised three children. That's not enough to buy me out of the doghouse? Haec credam a Deo pio, a Deo iusto, a Deo scito? Cruciatus in crucem. If you think that Breaking Bad was a good show then that only speaks to the level that the video games have degraded your mind. Season 5 of Breaking Bad is the single worst season in the history of television. The first couple of seasons were passable, that's as far as I can go in terms of praising it.

In the second half of breaking bad it is hot pocket meme time all the time.

I disagree completely with mad men being dead. I am the type of person who can only watch an entire series once, maybe twice once its completely over, but I already feel like I am ready for a rewatch of the series after rewatching it completely before the final season last year

It's one of those shows that, as you grow and your perspective towards life and your understanding of human behavior changes, you begin to look at their motivations differently and have different interpretations with each rewatch. Plus, there is just so much fast dialogue and subtle characterizations that you will always catch something new when you watch again
>>
>>71711518
I feel like you were on the edge of making a good point and are correct when you say that it is typically seen as the default favorite episode to those who only understand the show at a surface level.

However, the dark comedy exists throughout the show's run is so essential to what makes the show so perfect and its weird how you reference Mad Men when they were doing shit like the lawnmower scene and the 200 pound Negro prostitute all the time that is exactly in the style of the Soprano's humor and is just as essential to its formula as well.

The funny bits in this show are better than most actual comedy shows

I'm not sure if its because it's just refreshing levity in the middle of all the serious subject matter, or because you come to know these characters so well. Maybe a bit of both

I remember one little bit in season 5 where Janice is ranting about something and says "That bitch is lucky I didn't kill her!", and Tony just does one of his quick little grins and says "Well, we know that." She gives him a death stare that would give even Livia pause.

Tony and Janice's interactions are some of my favorites. They both know exactly how to get under each other's skin right away

You seem too simple-minded to take all this so seriously and judge the show. PB isn't one of the best Sopranos eps, true, but it has important characterization in it that tells us a bit more about these characters than we otherwise would have, and therefore, isn't sheer entertainment that "holds the show back" as you put it.

>>
>>71716973
BrBa is an utterly mediocre at best show, especially given the existence of The Sopranos.

BrBa literally has nothing going for it except for an occasionally engaging plot. It's just a cartoony adventure with 1-dimensional "characters" that viewers can enjoy "putting themselves in their shoes."

Beyond that, there's nothing insightful or artistic to connect and enjoy contemplating--it's just fast food TV to kill 45 minutes of your time brainlessly. It's fine if you like it, but BrBa is justifiably criticized here, especially when the topic is a legit brilliant, artistic and moving show.

BrBa is Tom Clancy. Sopranos is Shakespeare. Don't expect people discussing Shakespeare to accommodate glowing opinions of Clancy.

>>
>>71720214
Game Of Thrones and Breaking Bad are both on the same level of disposable non-artistic empty hype driven television.

Breaking Bad was largely a more watchable show than GoT from a subjective standpoint, but it's still working in the same plebeian territory. Walking Dead is right there too but that's even worse than GoT. They're all low brow pleb dramas.
>>
>>71719753

>>
>>71720380
>don't remember this. context?

cold cuts, two tonys make fun of him and he starts crying on the way home reflecting on his childhood
>>
>>71720337
Not him, but you have to admit that the characters will almost always act as they have. In Sopranos, let's focus on Tony (it is a character study afterall), one of the deepest characters in TV. He has so many complex emotions and thoughts, compounded on memories and ideals that it's hard to crack him and see things how he does. The whole fiasco with Pie-O-My! Is a prime example. He couldn't handle the loss of innocence anymore, it broke him, literally who would of thought that a dead horse would send Tony over the edge? He has depth, he has dimensions, "Say My Name" has an arc, but no depth.
>>
>>71716973
But when it's Better Cal Saul, /tv/ goes 'WAAAH, TOO SLOW, NOTHING HAPPENS'.

>>
>>71720480
Oh there's no doubt Tony is incredible character, but you can't just make the definition of depth your own, Walt has depth but of course it's different, it's might be more realistic as well. Walt couldn't break over the loss of innocence because he is already broken, he is already dead. Say My Name isn't even the end of his arc, the real end of Ozymandias. How can you say he's so one dimensional and acts the way he always has, when he tries to save Jesse's life for the entirety of the series and then in the end does decide to kill him? And even more the reason he decides to kill Jesse is because of other people's perceptions, which is of most importance to the entirety of the series, it's all about how perceptions effect one another and how we unknowingly craft the world by seeing it in certain ways, at certain times, brought on by heightened or lowered personal emotion, it isn't really a character study, but it is absolutely a character drama.
>>
>>71720028
>They could have presented that characterization in a less "entertaining" way

I think you know you're getting real far-fetched here. You're saying they should avoid inserting some really funny moments along with the plot and characterization, because it might be too entertaining. Get real.
>>
>>71720889
>You're saying they should avoid inserting some really funny moments along with the plot and characterization, because it might be too entertaining. Get real.
Absolutely, if you're watching the sopranos for "funny moments" when there is such amazing human character exploration you're watching the wrong fucking show. Don't enable the plebs. Comedy is inherently puerile and cheapens any work in which it rears its head.

>>
>>71720274
It's just technical and theoretical, but no, to answer your questions, doing unspeakably horrible things to children is not "obj bad."

Morality is always subjective because at its root, any moral claim begins with the premise "I believe [so and so is undesired]." Try it--"prove" murder is "objectively wrong." By contrast, you do not have to begin with a subjective premise to prove 2 + 2 = 4. That's an objective statement.

No need to get carried away by this--it's just technical/theoretical as I said--we obviously have to have laws criminalizing murder, robbery, and many other things. So it doesn't really "change anything" that you can't prove stabbing infants is wrong, it's just a technical point.

If there were a real God that prescribed some sort of universal moral law, then perhaps there could be objectively good and bad things.

Breaking Bad is more red pilled. Sopranos might have more red pilled characters but not red pilled writers
>>
>>71721464
Breaking Bad is enjoyed by mainstream reddit facebook culture and therefore can never be redpilled.

Sopranos is as well. And yes, it can still be red pilled. It can also be subversive, you dumb fuck. Is South Park not red pilled? How about early Simpsons?

the writers of breaking literally gave the Nazi characters lines that were quotes of Vince Gilligan's as a joke regarding his personal politics.

I never had a problem with Paulie when watching the show years ago, but in the time since then I have realized that he is the most /v/eddit tier character and the show would have been better without him, this is based on the people I see using the character as a reaction image and the things they say
>BASED COMFY PAULIE
>FUCKING PAULIE MEME MAN IS THE BASEDEST
I'm at the point now where he is the human emodiment of the video game. The cheeto dust is wafting off the monitor every time I open an image of him.
>heh heh
What a funny recurring meme trait for the fanbase to repeat to it other while at Sopranos is based comfy epin show get togethers. Fuck Paulie.
>>
>>71720337
BrBa characters only have a handful, or fewer, reactions to different situations. And these situations themselves are cartoonish to begin with (crimes related to a meth-deal white suburban 50-something). This is boring and doesn't tell us anything we can really relate to.

Jesse for instance is largely just a cliched "fuck up" stoner-type 20-year-old. We only really ever see him as a slacker/goofing off, and then we see a simplistic emotional side, where he takes some umbrage at Walt's immoral acts or is very depressed. None of that is interesting or nuanced. It's just very uninsightful and predictable for a 20-something "dumbass" to react the way that Jesse reacts, and the simplistic execution doesn't really tell us anything about human life. (The other characters fit this simplistic mode too.)

Chrissy, on the other hand, shows a range of emotions and reactions to more realistic, nuanced situations than what Jesse faces in BrBa. He experiences betrayal/being used in pursuit of his dream, he shows angst when contemplating his identity and the banality of everyday life, etc., and these events inform how he lives his live later. The experiences motivate him to change or assert himself. This all becomes satisfying because you can relate to how (in part because the events/everyone's role in the events are relatively realistic) Chris feels and reacts. And you can bring up lots of these for most every other character too. They feel like real people.

There's a lot of very true to life dialogue as well--from Tony telling Sil he's a success because of his *personal* attributes, not because of his Italian ancestry, to Tony saying believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see, etc. etc. Weaving all this in enhances the realism--these seem more like real people talking about real things that really matter, rather than a high school drug-dealing teacher saying a one-liner to intimidate someone.

She tripped, and hit her head I swear.

I don't get who Tony is all of a sudden, he had that homo erotic aggressive relationship with the bartender George, always beating him, like he hated the man on man relation he had on him in private and wanted to portray a tough guy image, and poor Georgie let him do it too. It's one of the untold love stories of Sopranos you have to piece together yourself, get use to it folks, Tony and Georgie had a sexual relationship.
>>
>>71724021
he beat Georgie the first time because him being incompetent with technology reminded him of his mother. He was angry at his mother but he couldn't beat her so he took it out on Georgie. All the physical pain he wished he could instill in his mom he gave to him.

The second time Tony was just angry and frustrated. He needed to take his anger out on someone and Georgie was just at the wrong place and the wrong time

depends who you ask. some will say The Wire is better others will say the Sopranos.

The Wire focuses more on society and touches multiple themes and issues compared to the Sopranos

lets face it, theres too much nigger bullshit in the Wire. That is the barrier that most people have with it. If you can get past that its pretty good though. The Sopranos may try hard to make the Italians worse than niggers (especially later on in seasons) but the truth is; if you do it honestly, niggers are orders of magnitude scummier.

Wew lad.
First off you don't know much about Moral Realism becuase they're not teaching it to you in high school right now, but its a position most philosophers take that objective morality exists (even outside the belief of a God or gods).
Have you looked up success rates or statistics on torture? It is a useless means of information extraction for 2 reasons. 1. The person being tortured probably won't have answers to your questions and 2. They'll say anything you WANT to hear to get a break from the pain. It's unsuccessful and this is taught in first-year college courses (buy you're not there yet). I really don't give a damn, but quit being edgy and trying to sound smart, everything you said is laughably dumb and shows your age. Children are morally bankrupt? Are you fucking stupid? Haha

A slight majority does not qualify as 'most'

Meta-ethics: moral realism or moral anti-realism?

Accept or lean toward: moral realism 525 / 931 (56.4%)
Accept or lean toward: moral anti-realism 258 / 931 (27.7%)
Other 148 / 931 (15.9%)

It's been years since I watched the Sopranos series but is that the episode where they shoot the Russian guy in the woods?
>>
>>71736463
Yeah, most, especially when you factor the "other" from the equation, it's double. Either way, he was advocating that their is no objective goods or bads, when clearly there are. Not everything has to have one, but if I can set up a scenario and your only defense is circular reasoning of subjective emotions, the point is moot. Finding a random toddler the age of 3 and torturing him for weeks before killing him can only be considered morally right if you derived pleasure from it and your morales are based around you and you getting pleasure. Outside of you, however, it's wrong, moral goodness transcends the self. Morals do not exist in a universe without life and conscious thinking, but once we obtain the ability to reason, morals are transcendent of self, even if it's a scale we cannot perceive yet. I'm really over having this conversation on a fucking Sopranos thread. You won't change, I won't change, have a good one.
