I put my dog down 2 days after her cancer diagnosis. It was a very late diagnosis, vet said she only had a few weeks of intense pain before she finally kicked it. (It was a rare kind of cancer that only shows symptoms very late) In hindsight, it was for the best because neither of us had to suffer through it. Can't imagine a situation like what you mentioned.
