But is it primitive? The horror of losing yourself; sacrificing who you are to do something great as part of the Cybermen, doing good for people by healing the sick and the poor and replacing the damaged parts with cybernetics:that's all an allegory for people who start out trying to do the right thing and fuck up hard, losing themselves in the process. It is a concept as solid and tested as the fallen-hero, and that's because it is just a cybernetic version of the fallen hero.

Big Finish's story Human Resources has the Cybermen run down by the 8th doctor for this very reason, and it's very good: what good is all the achievement you make if it no one can enjoy it; if all you can do is achieve; when your achievement isn't for any benefit anymore it becomes oppression;when your quality of life is high but no one can live that life; and when you boil it down their argument is always doing good, but nobody is really able to experience that good: so which is crueler, the ones who will let people die as themselves or the shambling corpses who will never die and never live again?

What was that guy's deal anyway? He was stuck in a wheelchair and always talked about how great the cybermen are with their bodies of metal that never tire. So why was he terrified when he was brought to the conversion-chamber? I thought the whole point of cyber-conversion was healing the sick. Shouldn't he have been the first in line? Doesn't he want to have an all-powerful metal body? Doesn't he want to get out of that wheelchair?

This is so wrong I don't even know where to start. I guess the most obvious bit is that the psychic paper is generally used when the writers don't want the Doctor to break in because they need him to openly interact with people without being seen as an intruder.

There's not really much to see.
He basically just puts them on and lightly touches the top and then stuff happens.
It was simple and nice I thought than waving the sonic everywhere or when 11 would scan something and then look at nothing.
One of the comics showed a visual interface he looked at through the glasses but that was never shown on TV.

>Doctor Who has a long standing tradition of breaking into places then convincing people he's right and justifying it.
He still does that pretty often, with the most recent example, I believe, being in Face the Raven. It's just not a good format for every story. Psychic paper was first introduced in The End of the World for instance. Do you think that episode would have been improved by the Doctor being apprehended by guards and having to either escape and spend the whole episode evading them or convince them logically that there was some reason for him to be there (which there really wasn't) instead of getting to impersonate a delegate and get on with things and focus on what the episode was supposed to be about?
>>
>>71664813
I always loved 7 typing up his credentials after walking into the camp in Fenric.
>>
>>71664882
I was just about to say this. I like how he does it so blatantly.
>>
>>71664813
Yes, because in an episode about Party Crashing, sneaking around is a whole lot more fun than an entire episode of "look how weird everything in the future is". Infact it would have fixed a lot of shit by taking the focus off the terribly aged cg and dated references.
>>
Wouldn't it have been better if in Last Christmas, after the old Clara dream is over the Doctor gets back in reality and goes to her only to find out she's a rotten corpse and has been dead for a long time because of the Dream Crab?
>>
>>71664964
That would be defeating the point of the episode, which is to introduce new viewers to how weird everything in the future is. It's one thing if you think that wasn't done well, but it doesn't justify throwing out the entire concept in favour of a different and less useful kind of 'fun'
>>
>>71664570

The only reason baneposting has survived this long is because people use their creativity to appropriate it into different contexts for comedic effect
>>
>>71665014
But it wasn't done well: if you introduce a whole bunch of characters and interesting events, you have to follow up. They followed up on exactly two of those events(3 if you count the beast below....kind of).

But more than that, when you have to introduce an alien future, you have to do a conservation of it, otherwise it'll seem silly. If you blast a viewers eyes full of weird aliens, then of course itll look stupid like the end of the world did.

JNT understood this:Four to Doomsday uses one alien race and anchors it in exotic earth cultures.

Moffat understands this:Beast below introduces one big scifi element but isolates your understanding of the universe to one ship and a whale.

Hell, even verity lambert understood this:the daleks showed a little future city then went away from it, unfolding it slowly for viewers to get acclimated.

A sneaking plot would have allowed for examination at a reasonable pace and one at a time instead of tryingbto go for sensory overload.

Honestly sensory overload as a plot point is pretty shite.

Steven is a cunt.

I know for certain that the next series will be Peter Capaldi's last. He has not enjoyed his time as the Doctor and wants to move on fairly swiftly. New Doctor for Christmas 2018 episode. Very likely to be young, the DW team already looking for the replacement.

Not anon, but i've been told some things about what went on behind the scenes of Sleep no More by someone who knew one of the runners.

Friend and I are trying to get her boyfriend into Doctor Who. He said he'll give it two episodes. What two would you recommend? He said he won't count a two-parter as one episode.

I was thinking Blink as a kind of teaser, and then Vincent and The Doctor to show that the show can be serious/emotional at times really well, as this is what seems to be recommended around the Internet, but neither are really my personal favorite episodes.

What do you think of starting someone off with Human Nature + Family of Blood?

>tense historical situation
>horrific aliens
>the Doctor is introduced to himself as he's introduced to us
>dat hardcore ending

NO!

Do not start with an episode where the Doctor isn't there or is not himself. Eleventh Hour and Beast Below are the way to go.

The Wedding of River Song. Ask him what he thought was going on afterwards.
>>
>>71666347
I've always thought Human Nature would be a good introductory episode. Although you might ask him if he'd accept a Classic 4-parter since it's the same length as two NuWho episodes. That'd open up a lot of good options.
>>
>>71666347
I'd hold off those episodes for a while. You don't want to shoot your load too early. Try him off with a few decent but not top notch episodes and see how it goes.

I'm doubtful of Human Nature as an introduction, half the idea with that is that you know something's not right with the Doctor and are waiting for the pieces to fall into place. All the stuff with the chameleon arch and the fucking vengeance of a Time Lord is a lot to suddenly drop onto a new viewer who hasn't even been introduced to the basic style of the show yet (and thus doesn't understand why this is significant).

This, actually. I'd recomend Listen or mummy if you're or he maybe in capaldi. I would as a juxtaposition to matt's doctor. Eccleston's series is too sophomoric, and I think tennant might be viewed as similar to tennant on a cursory or shallow level.
