This movie was actually supposed to have a happy ending, but the director literally forgot to say cut, which is why their expression changes from happy to melancholy.
It was an accident. The director had someone else fill in for him when filming this scene, and he forgot to yell cut. It was supposed to end with them holding hands or something, but instead they're looking around because they didn't know what else to do.
