it's not
it's pretentious but in the actual sense of the word and not the reddit sense
like saying
>Malick is pretentious muh grass muh God
is reddit, but
>Innaritu makes shallow movies with epic cinematography and faux depth and can only reach for cynicism as a result of having nothing genuinely thematic to speak of as an artist apart from topical garbage
is how pretentious actually makes sense
>>
>>71646312
3000+ yikes :)
>>
>>71650022
Agreed. I feel similarly about Villeneuve, especially with Prisoners. THATS the real definition of pretentious, not films that are less accessible or unconventional. I find almost zero films pretentious, because most directors film with sincerity. It's the ones that only pretend to be deep that are offensive. They don't have anything to say, but they sure do their best to make people think they do
>>
>mfw can't watch any movie until I buy a new hard drive
what are some good short films on YouTube for this feel?
>>
>>71650126
where did the idea that PRISONERS is attempting to be deep or thoughtful come from? it never really struck me as anything other than a well-paced thriller.

>>
>>71650195
I felt it was completely bogged down by a) pointless symbolism and b) scenes of "emotional intensity" that served to move the viewer, yet had inadequate set up, acting, and impact as a result. It completely lacked nuance, and, as such, made scenes of emotional breakdown or morally ambiguous torture seem like concepts weakly strung together; pieces of emotion meant to affect the audience, even though they didn't smoothly fit and the story was not there in a deep or thoughtful or even subtle sense

when you talk about symbolism, you're talking about the snakes and mazes, right? think i talked to you about this in another thread. imo, neither was intended to represent or imply anything, but were pretty simply just clues to the identity of the killer. as far as your other point, i thought that the performances, particularly Jackman's, were quite good.
>>
>>71650661
That's a fair point about snakes and mazes. I disagree about performances, I found only Jake and Paul to be very good. I do need to rewatch it though, the first time was with friends and they massively hyped it and I ended up disappointed. It's hard though, because I do disagree about pacing; the "bogged down" made it feel so long. At one point I thought surely it was over, but there was still an hour left. It was too small a story stretched over too long a runtime.
>>
>>71650251
the revenant has one of the weakest scripts i've ever seen and Innaritu adds nothing but time and padding with the direction
>dude dead wife lmao
>dude revenge is meaningless lmao
>dude the racism on the american frontier was bad lmao
it's cringeworthy, and also by far the worst Lubezki I've ever seen. He keeps panning around during actions sequences like its a fucking video game instead of being cinematic. Children of Men is how to properly do long takes, not the opening attack in the Revenant. Cuaron is leages ahead of Innaritu

no you retarded nigger, but Innaritus films have empty visuals even if they're pretty
they require context to have meaning, and Innaritus context is either absent, shallow, or juvenile
Malick is how you make near visual only films with visuals that directly convey emotion and thematic material. Innaritu just cuts to trees and rays of light inbetween epic revenge story nonsense

it was alright. Very pretty film and nice wardrobe on everyone, kinda felt like a perfume/cologne commercial. Everything felt and looked very superficial. None of the relationships the main character had/developed felt real. I didn't particularly enjoy the ending but I have no ideas for how it should have ended. With that said, I still agree more people should watch it.

i always thought 3 was average, 3 and a half was above average, and 4 was good

maybe he has a different rating system

even with 3 and a half tho that's 1,086 out of 18,376 that he thinks are at least above average, which is about 6%

does he just pick movies out of random and watch them or something
>>
>>71657197
I admire his dedication, but he really hasn't come away with much considering how many movies he has seen.
That's what you get when you watch movies for the wrong reasons.
I rather be an embryo for another 5 years than do what he has done.
