I especially love berserk's twist on this. Griffith was an asshole playing his minions like a fiddle, but because he was willing to sacrifice himself for his dream as well as others (for example having buttsex to obtain provisions for his army) he believed he was different, he couldn't admit it until the god hand forced him to confront it.
