What a difference a day made
>>
The recurrence across the franchise of villainous, tentacled robots whose very shape and motion displays their primary function to destructively penetrate any object, along with the gendered specificity of Driller’s mechanical take on the vagina dentata myth, exemplify the extent to which these non-humanoid Decepticons’ perceived threat is dramatised by figures of rotation rooted in hyperbolic, normatively gendered visions of castration and penetration. The deployment of the trope of rotation in these action sequences visually configures power persistently in terms of an outwardly displayed capacity and desire to penetrate; this is mastery as a (frequently slow motion) ‘screwing’ of the space of action, or of opponents’ bodies. It’s an intensification of the ‘phallocentric bias’ that Scott Bukatman finds at the heart of science fiction’s technological sublime (28); and one that we might, at first glance, dismiss as an expression of the alleged machismo of Bay’s directorial approach, hinted at in his notorious description of his aesthetic as ‘fucking the frame.’ But while these connotations are repeatedly made available through the franchise’s visual elaboration of its narrative action, to understand the rotational aesthetics of the action sequences only in these terms risks perpetuating the essentialising, binary conception of gender that underpins both phrases like ‘fucking the frame’ and the easy designation of visions of penetration — spatial or physical — as masculinist. Equally, in Bukatman’s discussion of science fiction films like Blade Runner (Ridley Scott, 1982) and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Steven Spielberg, 1977) that figure the technological sublime in terms of a pronounced ‘spatial probing’ (29), he reminds us that the ‘overdetermined phallocentric thrust’ of these visions ‘should not blind us to the overwhelming need to map ourselves into the anxious spaces of first industrial and now electronic culture'

On the matter of this memetic autism with machill and the rwyw lad, it is indeed a lot clearer when classic ratings are used; sure the heart-when-I-like-thing has its own more brutish purpose, but the binarity of it disallows a better, fuller perspective about the person.

it's foolish to think that a movie can be reduced to a rating tho. Imo if you want to know if you should watch a movie based on someone's appreciation of it, you should read his review and eventually the rating can help, but review > rating.

it is insane how angry people consistently get about this. Letterboxd is just a film diary website, you can use as much or as little of the functionality as you want. You don't have to follow any body, if it upsets you that people don't rate then just ignore them

Why don't people get angry at people who don't write reviews for every movie? There's the functionally right there on the site, lots of people do review movies, and it makes your profile less useful to the reader if you don't, what are you some sort of special snowflake or something???????

Wrong. Also, trying to apply the same rating scale to different kinds of films doesn't work, especially when you delve into more abstract works.

I've contemplated deleting my ratings multiple times, but at the moment am happy with just not rating most non-narrative films I watch.

I get why people find it dificult to follow those who don't rate, but usually you can get other indications of their taste and how it matches yours.

Personally, I don't follow anyone who doesn't rate unless they consistently write reviews or I know them personally, or speak to them somewhat regularly so I can further discern their thoughts on films.

If there was a delete all ratings button Letterboxd, I would probably press it, tbqh.

that's the point, post-60s robot godard is controlled opposition. much like the CIA invented """modern art""" as memetic warfare against socialist realism, robo-godard is a CIA plant who was put into place to draw communist sympathizers out of the woodwork. zizek is one as well

FYI: anyone who has discussed godard on this board has been put on a list

VVitch was a total meme. Every frame of the film tried to be as spoopy as possible, the mystery in the plot was completely absent, and it follows the modern horror norm of just being a vehicle for unsettling visuals instead of focusing the horror through pacing and plot

Anyone here seen taxidermia?

I saw it a long time ago and only remember that it features puking and a fire shooting dick.

May actually rewatch it seriously since it looks pretty fucking neat.

>>71638971
I could see that as a valid complaint, but can you see how that might not be considered a very strong one?

A horror MOVIE should focus on unsettling visuals. The plot wasn't necessarily an inherently frightening one but it was serviceable.

Striving for ever frame to be unsettling is not a bad thing by any means, and the movie was not conventional by modern broad release standards.

Maybe not a masterpiece, but anything above average in modern horror seems great nowadays just like the babadook and it follows.

>A horror MOVIE should focus on unsettling visuals
yeah, but not for literally EVERYTHING
look at Alien or the Thing. It sets up the setting in a way that's pretty normal. The VVitch makes walking in a field and playing with a Baby seem like it's supposed to be as scary as Jack chasing his son with an axe at the end of the Shining.
I don't even watch most horror movies, but it seems to me like the thing I dont like about them is the fact that the horror comes more from visuals/effects than the plot and the VVitch did just that. The "plot" meanders entirely for the middle 45 minutes of the film capitalizing on hysteria to replace character motivation. the only person in the entire movie with coherent motivation was the father; Thomasin and the Twins made no sense as to whether they were possessed or not and the fact that Thomasin becomes a witch at the end is literally only to show the spoopy magic orgy

Fair enough.

Viewed objectively those are all perfectly suitable. Makes me revaluate the movie a bit. I still like it a lot as a fan of horror movies and a person who's hated most of the jump scare BS of the last decade.

But they really don't explain the twins at all and there's absolutely no arc comparatively to Alien or The Shining. That's what you mean by plot right?

That the movie starts steeped in dread and stays that way with only a bit of upward movement. Otherwise its all in one location and with the same general stakes, etc.

The VVitch sucked because it has that annoying hipster SLEEK look to it. Everything is SLEEK. Look at me this composition and movement is SLEEK. It's CINEMATOGRAPHIC.

Literally could not suspend my disbelief at any moment because of how fucking boring the film looked in every aspect.

No flair, no identity, in the same trash bin with Green Room.
