I don't think it's out of character. After all the shit that's happened over the last two seasons, the team is ready for a change. A big one. They're weary and beaten down. I don't think it's too much of a stretch at all to be honest. As for it being boring, I think the episode balances each character perfectly and has many great moments, especially as a send-off to Lilah who is hands down my favorite character. I love the bit where Wesley tries to destroy her contract.

I honestly haven't seen Buffy since high school (8 years ago), but I watched it religiously back then. The one I remember being blown away by is one where Buffy gets stabbed by a demon with a hallucinogenic stinger, and it makes Buffy hallucinate that she's been in a mental hospital and made her whole horror universe up in her head. Buffy has to decide whether to allow herself to succumb to the hallucinogen and let the monster kill her friends so she can wake up in the hospital and get better, or fight the monster, thus counteracting the hallucinogen and saving her friends. She of course decides to save her friends, but the last scene shows her in the mental hospital world going totally catatonic, thus leaving you uncertain which world is real.

"Passion", although I always had a soft spot for "Nightmares" in season 1. Probably the first time in the series that we really see inside the character's heads and get an idea of just how strong their relationships are. Giles kneeling down next to Buffy's grave and saying how sorry he was he couldn't do a better job is legit heartbreaking. Also like the comforting and distinct lack of snark Buffy shows towards the child plagued by the visions, and the ending is all kinds of comfy.

I think they did an amazing job, especially with Giles and his midlife crisis. Plus it's the only season where Xander actually seems like an interesting, likable character. Add Spike and Anya on top of that, and they were killing it with the characters in season 4.

Both episodes are great, but personally I was impressed by numerous episodes. Hush, The Faith two-parter, the episode where Giles is turned into a demon, the episode where Jonathan becomes the center of the universe (the crew spent untold hours making Jonathan merchandise and decor just for that episode,) the episode where Buffy's roommate drives her insane, the Halloween episode, and who can forget the brilliant finale, aka the dream episode.

Her whole character was being a volatile teenager who was looking for a father figure and found it in the wrong place, I didn't see any of that as being a detriment to the character so much as being a decent portrayal of someone still basically a child thrust into a position of power without the benefit of the support structure Buffy had in her life.

I think the big difference in opinion about this is the fact that I've known people who acted the exact same way (albeit less stabby) as both Faith and Buffy/Angel in season 3 so I don't have a hard time with it.

The whole season was about uncertainty over what comes next and not knowing what you want that to be. Which isn't a very deep idea, I'll give you that, but it doesn't have to be to still be done well. The other seasons had way heavier themes to be sure, but they had their own problems with how they went about portraying them. Everything from Faith running from the vampire and self-sabotaging for a semblance of control over her destiny to Jonathan going all final solution represented that. Hell, the whole Buffy and Angel thing is them being indecisive and afraid to proceed either way because they don't want to be hurt again (which is usually the reason that sort of thing happens IRL) is symptomatic of that. Willow and Xander's indiscretion in the basement was the same thing on a smaller level. Angel leaving and the school blowing up at the end represent the closure that can come from sealing your fate one way or another and finally moving forward down a singular path.

This comment had Buffy fuming with rage but at the same time heartbreakingly
depressed. The thing was Buffy was out of punishments. She had grounded Dawn
for months, took away her allowance, and even forbid her from watching TV but
it seemed a losing battle. Most of her punishments she couldn't enforce when
she wasn't around and her friends were too busy to baby-sit, and even if they
weren't she felt too embarrassed to ask them to help keep Dawn in check. That
was supposed to be her job and it was her fault that she couldn't seem to do
it right. So what was she going to do? How could she deal with this? If she
couldn't disciplined Dawn then she would be taken away from her...
discipline... now there was a idea.
"Hey... hey... get off of me! What are you doing?" Dawn said as Buffy grabbed
her by the arm, and escorted her over to the sofa.
Buffy didn't answer. Instead she sat down on the sofa and forced Dawn across
her knee. Holding her little sister in place Buffy undid the buttons on
Dawn's jeans and pull them down, before doing the same to her panties.
"I said what are you doing you freak! Get the hell off of - oww!" Dawn was
cut off by a hard slap to her exposed back side which made her cry out in
pain.
