Kim was friends with Paris Hilton and leveraged that into a minor reality show about her "wacky" family who were minor celebrities because of Bruce(the Olympian) their step-dad and their dead dad Robert who was OJ Simpsons lawyer.
To drum up publicity Kim released/leaked a terrible sex tape with some rapper(I think it was the brother of Brandi(from the black sitcom Moesha)) in which she didn't take off her bra because she hadn't had the surgery yet to make her boobs bigger, also he barely showed much of anything and her arse wasn't unremarkable.
The porno was called "Kim Kardashian SUPERSTAR!" which really lacked the creativity of the Paris Hilton porno "One Night In Paris."
Anyway because women are whores they tuned in to watch the trainwreck and the rest is history. Watching rich idiots bitching for half an hour, the ratings are dogshit(to compare "The Mysteries of Laura" regularly doubled the highest ever rated episode of KUWtK) but the show is really just a platform for promoting Kardashian branding as teenage girls buy KimK shit without hesitation.

Because they're talented and aggressive self-promoters. It's actually pretty impressive the way they're able to use any and every avenue to market themselves, especially over such a long period. I mean, there have been plenty of other socialites and celebutantes who are "famous for being famous" over the years, but I think the last ones who managed to keep themselves constantly visible and talked about for so long would be the Gabors.
