Are you being funny? The entire movie builds to that exact climax. It gives extra credence to Howard because he was basically spot on about what was going on. Listen to his explanation about how they attacked and were sweeping for signs of life and see how thats EXACTLY what happens to Michelle. Did you just go and read the Wikipedia synopsis?

Only movies I've seen so far this year are Batman v Superman, 10 Cloverfield Lane, and the Neon Demon.
Batman v Superman drags, it has some neat scenes but they're few and far between. The Ultimate Edition was better than the theatrical version but the same criticisms still apply.
10 Cloverfield Lane was good, but I can't see myself wanting to rewatch it. If you've seen it once you don't really gain much on a rewatch.
I saw Neon Demon earlier this week, and my initial reaction was an overwhelming sense of 'what the fuck', but I was captivated nonetheless. So far it's my MOTY, and I plan on seeing it again soon.
I haven't seen The Semeon Demon, I'd have to go with Meme Room out of what I've seen.
Warcraft was my MOTY. Yeah I guess it wasn't that great but man was it fun to watch. 10/10

I literally felt like hanging myself for choosing to see this movie. The preachy overbearing tone is absolutely horrible, the animation etc. brings nothing new to the table, character designs are made with furries in mind, lacks any kind of subtlety or respectable undertones.
The only good part where I laughed was the scenes with Mr. Big.
I haven't seen any 10/10, 9/10, or 8/10 films this year.

I agree. J.J. Abrams just couldn't help himself with that one. A lack of closure would've made the movie better. The last 10 minutes made what would've been a good slow-reveal film into another trite aliens-did-it scenario. It was lazy writing, like they got to the end and thought:
