Lucky Mckee made a movie called The Woods a while back. In fact I think he got beef with Shyamalan because Shyamalan wanted to call The Village "The Woods" and Mckee beat him to the punch. Simple name, really. The kind that tells you nothing.

Anyway, Mckee's movie was alright. Teenage witches. Bruce Campbell had a small role.

conjuring 2 and annabelle are actually worth watching, surprisingly.

conjuring 2 had some good spooks and some super cheesy parts, but annabelle was good on a big screen, basement scene was GOAT

>>
Dellamorte Dellamore. I'm probably talking out of my ass but I suspect that movie was the inspiration of David Lynch's Lost Highway. It's one of my favorite horror movies.
>>
If you dig Supernatural you might want to check out Trollhunter. Dunno if the creators were somewhat influenced by it but the main character personality and m.o. is strikingly similar to that of the Winchesters. The movie has some dry and witty humor inspired by Norwegian culture and the final battle seems like something out of Shadow of the Colossus. Even if you don't like found footage, don't let it deter you - it's one of the best I've seen so far (only surpassed by [REC])

>>
>>71460416
I liked the conjuring

Conjuring 2 felt like the same movie, different setting, so I liked it I guess.

Annabelle had some cool moments but overall pretty lame.
I have NO idea how they're going to do Annabelle 2... I mean in Conjuring and Annabelle we saw her origin all the way up to her getting concealed by the Warrens. Is she going to escape?

And now we also have a movie about the nun from the conjuring 2 on the way. Why? Also according to James Wan that demon appeared as a nun specifically to Lorraine to question her faith, so now I guess it appears like that to everyone? I guess I'm jumping the gun though, and it can always try to get other people to question their faiths too but still.

The Witch was suspenseful.

Can anyone suggest an truly unsettling movies?

I got tired of gore and slashers many moons ago.
>>
What are some good slashers with actually creepy and unsettling villains?
Obviously I already saw Halloween/TCM/Black Christmas/etc.

I tried Hush, but it was boring and I felt it didn't use the "sociopath psychologically abuses a surdomute victim" premise to its fullest potential.
>>
>>71465916
Insidious. And if you like that, then maybe Insidious 2. 2 was just okay, and its just a continuation of 1. Avoid 3 at all costs. Insidious 3 is garbage.

Thanks, senpai.

D/L as we speak.

Any others?

I wanted to love The Conjuring so much with the clapping scene but once they said it was a witch, they blew their load early and I got bored of the rest of the movie.

I thought The Woman in Black was alright with the lack of CGI.

Harry Potter ruined it for me though.

Night Breed does suffer from trying to tell a really grand story too quick, but it's still fucking great.
So many great costumes, practical effects and characters... it's one of the last great wide scale fantasy horror films (maybe the last one).
It is a must watch, but...

The Woods 2006 is a really good horror movie. Also, it's set in the 60s. I thought it was a good idea and a decade we don't see much of in contemporary horror movies.

Don't mind him. Every general functions the same way. "Random tv show" generals are promoting "random tv show" the same way that horror generals may be promoting new horror movies. It's just how life goes.

well, it's kinda lynchian. it definitely wants to be.

I like a lot of it but it becomes more or less a slasher flick in the last twenty minutes. parts of it somewhat channeled Mulholland Dr, which I like.
>>
>>71473284
>I was a little disappointed by the execution when I got around to watching the full movie. I don't think they explored the hell aspect as much as they could've done
These are my thoughts as well.
Wouldn't call it good but I wouldn't call it bad either.
>>
>>71473284

I think it's a remarkable feat to make a setting as terrifying and real as the catacombs as flat and boring as they did. In the end, that real 10 minute video of the guy getting lost in the catacombs is 50 times more effective than any segment in this movie. They spent too much time setting up why they were going in there, not enough time to let the horror of actually being inside the catacombs sink in, and in the end, it's just some shitty le mindfuck movie. Huge disappointment.
>>
>>71473290
6/10. kinda fucking furious here...
>>
>>71473209
Ah, see now I haven't watched either of those movies so I was completely unaware for the most part. I suppose what really drew me to the movie was watching Kurt Russel in a Western; I really liked Jeff Bridges in the True Grit remake so I think I subconsciously wanted to see another "modern" actor in a Western setting.
>>
>>71473306
Yeah but he's one of those cult actors, like Brad Dourif and Lance Henriksen.

The last scene really ruins it. It should've been her murdering all of her friends, and the producer guy telling her how she played herself. Instead it was her transforming into a green-eyed demon

I recommend watching The Hills Have Eyes remake it's by far better than the original

Loved it, not scary but god tier atmosphere, effects and set design. Story was ok. I really liked how the ghosts looked in the movie
>>
>>71473398
I also really enjoyed The Innocents

Except it's arguable how much it's a haunted house movie in the end.
>>
>>71473478
I completely agree. It couldn't hold a candle to the originals but it still works as a modern horror as it wasn't going for the same settings and threats that seem to be plaguing most Hollywood horrors recently.
>>
>>71473490
>I'll be watching Event Horizon and Hellraiser soon.

They're good anon, better than As Above So Below by a landslide. There's a reason they're cult classics.

The only movie I can recommend focuses more on the occult than hell and that's The 9th Gate.

There're quite a few asian movies that focus alot on hell but I don't recall the names sorry

>>
>>71473478
The last act was too tonally different from the rest of the movie. It was also too generic. A girl with a knife is the ultimate big bad? The rain of blood was a really good idea though. But it turned from a serious movie into a schlocky one with the arm-ripping, badass action and quips.

I didn't hate it, but the last part made it less than what it could have been.

>>71473597
I always find myself recommending this to people looking for unusual horror movies, it really manages to hook you in for the entire runtime. Quite tame in the horror aspect but I suppose that just makes it easier to recommend to most people. I really like that the film is open to theorising.

Giallo is a genre that is built on beautiful women dying in aesthetically pleasing ways
>>
>>71473905

the terrifying turned mundane completely scares me. when there's this horrible environment, this dark, hellish otherworldly experience happening and you're just in the thick of it, making dinner or something. you're living like you normally would, completely calm and rational, inside this hellish nightmare. rabbits, eraserhead both hit this on the head. on the surface there's this seemingly normal happening, but just a bit deeper it's a fucking incomprehensible nightmare.

good luck with your script. i've tried writing a horror script and it really is fucking difficult, considering most great horror is visual rather than dialogue.

tales of halloween is okay. as per usual anthology some are decent some are pretty bad. it's worth a watch if you get a little drunk and your standards start to dip.

Sure, but in say American horror(I know it's abroad statement, but bear with me) beautiful women tend to die in horrific manner, disemboweled, dismembered, tortured, etc.
Even in Suspiria, Sara is still looking mildly attractive, sans the horrible eyes, even after death.
Giallo is almost like a beautiful Renaissance painting, say a Rafael or Tiziano, but done by Giger and Bosch.

Yeah it's one of those films that will divide people, but personally I like it as a film about a man being dragged back into a lifestyle that he tried to leave only to end up in way over his head. The ending definitely comes out of the left field though but it's the atmosphere that I really appreciated most.

The sequence where he and his buddy are chased into the tunnels is a great piece of genuine tension.

That's the issue, there really aren't that many and the ones we do have aren't very good. It just seems like an untapped resource.

I might be missing out on a political angle on it though, perhaps France doesn't like films about the catacombs and that's why there aren't many.
