That was what I most enjoyed about Revelations and Sometimes a Great Notion
When they find Earth, everybody is absolutely ecstatic. They're crying tears of joy and hugging each other and kissing in celebration. Lee even jumps on the command console in the CIC and strips his jacket off in elation.
You can see it. They've done it. All the hard work, all the effort, all the sacrifice to finally achieve their goal.
Then they find Earth and it's an apocalyptic wasteland. They traded 12 nuked colonies for 1. They can't even settle because of the background radiation.
Then you see the impact it has on the crew. Graffiti on the walls, fistfights among the crew, people just abandoning their posts, men weeping in the corridors, suicides everywhere.
If there was one thing this show could do, it was convey despair.
And fucking how.

Of course BSG was always about the tribes of Israel looking for their promised land. I forget my old testament, but wasn't there some place that Moses found that wasn't the promised land? If that was 'the plan' there was no reason to hunt humanity to extinction. They had won by the end of the miniseries.
It was hinted at consistently that the plan was some sort of religious, pseudo-mystical prophecy coming true, that was the point of the zealot Cylon and his fixation on Kara Thrace. But it went nowhere because the writers were just winging it.
The end of the series is a huge copout, almost as bad as Lost. In many ways worse, because the show had much more potential.

I actually really liked it; parts of it felt like there was little to no thought put into it. Putting the Adama family in it felt like a huge error; I would have preferred shared universe but narratively completely detached from BSG. All their scenes felt weirdly anachronistic anyway.

The plan was Cavil wiping out humanity so that the "final five" would stop loving them. That's why the Caprica Cavil thought they had made a mistake because he realize that if they killed humanity, the final five would love just them more.
Wasn't quite that simple, but that's the jist of it. He also wanted to prove that designing them like humans was a mistake.
Underrated character
I like how he was basically a good person, but was just weak willed to do what was right. I don't know why, but he sold that really well.

I think they took some package with them from season three but not only the characters but the writers too. They suddenly abandoned the concept they had for continuing to live on the planet and just went back to business as usual. So somehow all they got to do was throw in differences between them which wasn't the worst idea.It just disappoints more later one when they are going to introduce their crazy Cylon roulette for main characters.
