Don't know about in the show but I'm pretty certain in the books The Others aren't just the spooky frozen death legion. They're described as looking beautiful and moving gracefully in the books and also there's that old story about the time a Night's Watch commander married one of them. I think that they're definitely more than a malevolent force out to do harm and that diplomacy is a very real option. Look at Krastor's Keep. He gave them babies in exchange for his peace. Was this just a prelude to their giant war and all they wanted was to bolster their numbers, or do they have their own motivations?
These guys live in the middle of nowhere so almost nothing is known about them and the books seem to be all about how nothing is as simple as it might seem and that conflicts have many sides to them and nobody's usually right. GRRM is very much anti-war in his storytelling so everything being resolved by a big 'good v evil' battle wouldn't be thematically fitting at all. Not to mention how unlikely it looks considering where the plot is going. Since 2/3 of the relevant nobility of Westeros hasn't been Bad Poosied or blown up the realm is still very much divided and distracted, while Kelly C. is across the channel and in an incredibly poorly state.

That's because it isn't going to happen in the book. In the book, Daenerys is going to accidentally trigger the wildfire with her dragons while fighting an impostor king. This will be a huge low point for her character and the beginning of her turn away from her current "might is right" way of rule.
You can tell that Cersei was never really set up to do this from the start because they just decided to have her scream "I'LL BURN THIS CITY TO THE GROUND" every two episodes since season four, and then in the last three episodes of this season they had completely separate people all going "hey by the way, there's wildfire under King's Landing". The way Cersei herself found out about it was by some guy telling her "THE RUMORS ARE TRUE..." ... what rumors? There haven't been any rumors. That's retarded. You might as well say "THE RUMORS ARE TRUE" and then in the next scene it turns out there was a portal to beyond the Wall inside Cersei's asshole and now she's shitting white walkers

I cared what happened because there was a strong story with background and tension between key figures, the end of season 1 set it up beautifully, now everything is predictable and you hardly care who ends up winning, the stakes are so low at this point, theres barely anything left to look forward to, lots of dumb battle scenes with zero dramatic value? Even Bran's storyline is trash at this point, theres no mystery left in any of the storylines, they're all traveling down a predictable ending
So assuming Bran is very close to the wall now (since Benjen had to leave), it shouldn't be too far off now that he passes through and (as everyone expects) fucks up the ancient mojo that Benjen mentioned.
Also since Varys could get to Dorne and back to Mereen in such short notice, I guess the average naval travel doesn't take long between Essos and Westeros. So Dany's army shouldn't have too long until King's Landing (if that's where she lands, who knows, maybe Dorne first to gather alliances?).
So that's fall of Castle Black first, second battle of Blackwater Bay next, then I'd assume the whitewalkers would head for Winterfell.

Instead they're just going treating that book 5 endpoint as the cutoff for story development, and now everything has to end toward the 1-3 major overarching points (who sits the Iron Throne, Daenerys conquers Westeros, white walkers attack). And the result is boring as shit, because it's exactly what everyone expected.
That's not inevitable. Managing these types of expectation is what any good story does. Even this one did, earlier on. Like back when people expected a big epic Robb vs Joffrey war. Instead we saw mostly politicking, infighting and then savage betrayal. Then people thought, oh, I'd like Dany to kill the Lannisters, or Jon, but then Joffrey suddenly dies of poisoning. Every situation launched characters into weird new situations, and the result was good drama. They stopped doing this. Now it's just a drudgerous march towards the expected.

I see your point, and i agree with you. But when you establish that the major story points are "Winter is coming", "Who will sit on the iron throne?" and "The Lich King is gonna fuck our shit up sempai". You can't have the characters who will ultimately be the "good guys" in the grand scheme of things still fucking eachother up, because if that is the case then the Walkers should just plow through everyone
