>highest grossing movie of all time
>no cultural impact whatsoever
What went wrong?
well you just made this thread, didn't you?
It kickstarted the most recent 3D revival.
Not a whole lot to come back to when rewatching it. There was a little interest in the Na'vi and Pandora, but their lore didn't go far, even if people did want to see it.
James Cameron fucked himself over by signing on for three more movies. What in the hell was he thinking?

>every movie now is 3D

>>no cultural impact whatsoever
rewatch it in 3D on a 50 inch TV or don't bother. the movie still looks amazing but has little else to offer.

It's not a real movie, it's a just tech demo.

The only thing flavorful about this movie is the cgi. Everything else about it has been done ad infinitum so it should have had deeper characters, better plot tropes, and better writing (for lack of a better term. I mean, "unobtanium"? really?) Further, it made the villains more sympathetic than the main cast when that wasn't the intent.
The message was so heavy handed and the Na'vi made so distasteful that people related more to the humans whose home is on the brink. Like it or not, humanity may very well go extinct because Sully chose the natives.
Everyone likes pro-environment messages, but when they are more meaningful and not hamfisted

Plebs fell the Cameron meme.

James Cameron's movies are known for their groundbreaking visual effects more than anything else.

>>71261414
what is this "cultural impact" shit you keep making threads about?
You watch sci-fi and superhero and Lord of the Rings, you dont know shit about culture or what impacts it, virgin.
>>71261700
>every movie now has CGI
Nah, that's been happening with big action movies since the early 90s. Animated kids' movies have been all-CGI since the early 00s.
The Star Wars prequels were 90% CGI.
Cultural Impact are literally memes
That's it. We are now rating movies based on memes
>Avatar came out 7 years ago
>nobody since has come close to making a 3D movie as effective
What the fuck is wrong with everybody else?
Why do we need Cameron to come back every 10 years and show everyone else how things should be done?
>>71262251
shut up retard

3D will always be a forgettable gimmick
>>71261879
A better example of something related to this is Mad Max Fedora Road being not a movie, but a stunt demo.
Avatar had more plot (albeit a stale plot) and characterization. Fedora Road was pretty much nothing but muh practical le stunts.

Bush's War is what happened.

>It's a "Anon uses meme buzzwords when he doesn't like a popular thing" Episode.
I've seen this movie once, and it was a bootleg camrip that my friend bought at the chinese mall when it first came out.
>>71262397
>Fedora Road
fuck off to to your letterboxd General.
Fury Road was a real movie not made in a computer.

>>71262937
Nope. Not on the same level of T1, T2, Predator, and The Matrix. Those movies have actual characters and plot. Fedora Road is a stunt demo for edgy manchildren. It has no story and the characters are about as stupidly written, cliched and boring as it gets.
History will bear this out, as Fedora Road will never reach iconic status as The Terminator movies and The Matrix have. It will only be remembered by people for whom movies are either EBIC or not EBIC.
>>71263171
>Those movies have actual characters and plot.
Fury road has a suitable story for what it is. And even with its minimal story, the characters are still fleshed out well (I liked Nix and Joe I lot).
Fedora road will definitely maintain cult status in the future. And this is coming from someone who has no motivation to ever rewatch it.

Predator is shit.
>>71261414
The movie received a lot of promotion. People watched it and found it forgetable. Simple as that.
>>71263523
the only reason it made so much was because of the delayed Blu-Ray release and theatrical re-releases.
>I'll be back
>Get away from her, you bitch!
>I'm king of the world!
And then there's Avatar. No quotable lines or memorable characters.

even though Titanic had awful characters, they were at least memorable to an extent.

Orgasm hair braids. It was all about the orgasm hair braids. Who has seen that movie and not wanted to be able to dominate everyone and everything with orgasms? If culture could be improved by one single thing from that movie, it would be the development of orgasm braids.

>What went wrong?
Nothing, it was meant to make money and it did. Films shouldn't strive for "cultural impact" because that creates an expectation of quality in any potential sequel that could reflect poorly on its box office performance if the standard is not perceived as being met.
