And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. The film's about a capitalist trying to make it big in the oil industry and becoming more morally bankrupt as it goes. It's done well. The scene in the OP is really quite beautiful. Daniel spent a lot of time ALONE, trying to strike for oil. The opening scenes of the film he finally does at the cost of his leg. What we don't see is him making the long trek back to a town to see a surgeon. That long trek gave Daniel his right to be as arrogant as possible about his land. He earned it, and he will succeed.
Henry showing up shows us some more of his humanity like in HW. Daniel has the potential to become a good person but it's taken away when HW goes deaf and Henry turns out to be a liar. There's NOTHING complex about this, but it's very rare do you get an entire film dedicated to just watching a character change. That's typically an avenue for novels.

There is art that contributes positively to society. i.e anti-denegerate art and then there is the gutter trash.
For all intents and purposes he is on the same level as pornography, video games and game of thrones. Yes, he is a more technically proficient craftsman, yet he uses that power for evil instead of good. Cinema is in a worse state for him existing. Now even the american masterpiece and been memeified and rendered infantile. There is a lot of blockbuster filth in this world, but PTA shot his bullet directly into the heart of "Legitimate" cinema so fuck him.
I feel like the emphasis is on "people," highlighting the fact that he doesn't see others as human beings. It's like he feels that he is the one true person among animals. It's completely within his character to see the world that way. He's a predator and everyone else are sheep, but he opens up to this one man because he think he's his brother. That makes them equal in his eyes, and for Daniel to nice to finally talk to an equal.
Even though this view is sociopathic, Daniel is still smarter and more cunning than anyone else in the movie. They don't even see themselves being played by him, and he comes out on top in the end.

I'm not saying all movies are art. Most of the movie output are pieces of entertainment designed to make money. But film at least has a history beyond itself with photography and theatre. And even though film is relatively young, having started roughly in the 1880's, it definitely has a tradition built into it. Video games are infantile, and I don't doubt that interactive experiences will become a respected art form in the future. However, most video game titles are bogged down by the large costs of production, and so the developers are less willing to take chances.
I don't think it's fair to put a blanket statement on a medium of whether or not they are art. I think that just shows a lack of critical thinking.
