Studios look for wayyy more than to "break even". Investing in a film's success is investing time as well as money. You finance a PTA film, sure, you can expect to make your money back eventually, but until then, that money is absent and time is being spent making a movie that could get you only a marginal net return, when it could have been spent quickly making a surefire blockbuster from franchise material. It's a matter of opportunity cost for the studio. When you're investing millions on a profit more than a year down the line you don't want that profit to just be 30% when it could multiply the original budget.

Everyone, including the backers, wants the creators to have somewhat stress free lives so that they can create, and focus only on that, without it going to their heads while they're working on a project. Usually the backers have enough money that they can take some hits. Also, they're good at money management so everyone else doesn't have to think about it.
PTA's in that weird ground where he gets some box office return and the critics love him (which gaurantees hard and soft media returns for decades) BUT his films are a little on the edge.
