Lolly's arc wasn't really much of an arc at all, and her character wasn't that fun to watch, her flashbacks just kind of gave some insight into her mental health situation but they never really clarified why exactly she wasn't in psych to begin with when she clearly had mental health issues.
The thing with Alex killing the hitman and burying him in the garden also didn't make much sense. I mean they sent the boss the pictures but how long will it take before the boss realizes that his hired gun has been missing for weeks? Months, even?
There was a really fucking weird tonal shift when it came to that one guard in particular (the guy who made Maritza eat the baby mouse), it kind of seemed like that scene just came out of nowhere and the show just took a huge dark turn that never seemed to affect anything from that point on really (or even have an effect in general).
They did the typical thing where they try to have the characters sort of act as placeholders for real life examples of topics in race relations. In this case Poussey was supposed to represent Eric Garner, Mike Brown, etc although whenever they do these things it feels like they do it with no attempt at subtlety at all. It feels like they're just recreating what happened at the time.
I'm also not a huge fan of how no attempt is made to bring human elements to the white power/neo-nazi characters. Characters on the show can be violent and hateful but there's typically a flipside to that part of their character, explained through some backstory or something. In this case it kind of just seemed like the writers wanted to push that the neo-nazi's were just ignorant and they were assholes because of it (implied in a few conversations throughout the season). Meanwhile, nobody else of any other race seems to harbor this kind of racial ignorance. There isn't one latino character who just hates black people out of that same ignorance, or vice versa?

I hated those scenes though because it seemed like a huge cop out on the part of the writers. Her "revelation" comes from being partners and hanging out with them for like 20 minutes instead of any kind of personal growth or examination behind the cause of her racism. Isn't that kind of the point of the show, though? They dedicated a whole arc to the idea that consent can be confusing when you've been taught one thing your whole life and then suddenly you're a rapist because you don't know how to confirm that consent. That was probably one of my favorite arcs because it gave credence to the idea that rapists aren't 100% evil things that aren't people when that's usually the prevailing idea of a rapist. Why can't the neo-nazis be explored in the same way? Obviously I'm not saying their beliefs should be justified but I think they should be given that same benefit of deeper characterization that most of the other characters get.

I started out watching it because it was something new to watch on Netflix. Senpai cancelled Netflix subscription after Season 2. I just downloaded S3 because eh might as well watch it since I had nothing else to watch.
Now don't get me wrong, some of the choices people make in the show is painfully fucking retarded and the show suffers from a serious case of "DO THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF WHAT ANY SANE PERSON WOULD DO IN THIS SITUATION" syndrome, but this season was actually good. I've watched two seasons of OITNB, mostly because my friend had a netflix subscription and I was extremely bored and my honest evaluation was this extremely medicore and often unfunny show only get its massive praise is because it is eaten up by self satisfied proponents of "progressive liberalism and social justice"
Want a good womens prison show, watch Bad Girls. It has good writing and doesn't shoehorn a clumsy agenda into every second. There is literally nothing redeeming about this stupid show, it panders to its audience in the same manner as MLP does to manchildren

yeah that's entirely dependent on the context and mood of the scene. I'm guessing you could understand that the writers of American History X were not pro-nazi when Derek was giving his little adolph speeches because those scenes were clearly designed to be disturbing whereas this scene the character casually makes her point and is offered no counterpoint, in fact that's the end of the scene. If you don't think that's a window into the views of the writer than you're being intentionally dull.

I felt like those story arcs were the only ones that mattered on the show. I'm tired of hearing about gays, racism and crazies(mainly Suzanne). At least they were trying to balance something out with this for profit prison but sometimes the dialogue can be annoying when it comes to the prisoners. also Healey has some shitty luck in life.
