Is this Varda's best

maybe ties with cleo
both are the best of the new wave

I haven't seen them all but I was floored by this one. Beautifully shot and totally bittersweet. I found it interesting that the fact that the main character was blue collar had no bearing on the rest of the plot. Most films these days seem to only show upper middle class people who don't work with their hands, but in this one the protagonist is working class but totally respectable in every sense. Today's depiction of working class people seems to be of the Larry the cable guy variety.

Also, it's shit compared to Les plages d'Agnes, Les glaneurs et la glaneuse and many others but those probably weren't released on criteiron so you haven't seen them.

Libraries sometimes, but it's hit or miss, or quality video stores, but those are rapidly disappearing. Some universities have decent collections in the cinema department.

Classic mistake - only watching what is on criterion is quite literally as effective/ineffective a way to provide yourself with films as it is to avoid criterion. Im sorry sir, youre a uselessly elitist faggot.

How about watching good French films?

Ever heard of Poetic Realism? Carné, Renoir, Vigo, Duvivier? Filmmakers that made authentic, popular yet profound and socially realist masterpieces, far from the drivel directed by Bourgeois left-wingers (or pseudo conservatives like Truffaut). Do you feel engaged when you watch films done by hacks revered by "les Cahiers"? "La Nouvelle Vague" was a tsunami of excrement thrown at the cinematic world. Critics - who always had a deep misunderstanding of cinema as an art form - overrates its influence... "Look! They're intentionally making mistakes! It's so post-modernist!"... No. Intetionally making mistakes is something a Wayan brother would do when he's too lazy to write an actual funny scene. Scorsese's worst films were his first ones, all influenced by the French New Wave, his best were influenced by Italian Neo-Realism. Tarantino eventually admitted that he grew out of Godard. Because that's what anybody with an ounce of sensibility would do. Once you understand films, you quickly realize how juvenile and intellectualy dishonest this "wave" of crap was. Thank God, back in the days, we had Audiard and Melville left but French cinéma died when they left. Now, it's gangrened with unfunny comedies, films about the existential despair of bourgeois women who are tempted to cheat on their husbands or shitty thrillers.

Save this as a copypasta, it might be useful to educate plebs who think highly of themselves because they watch a film directed by an old liberal bitch.

Can we all agree that Nouvelle Vague irreparably destroyed the art house movement of the 60s? It literally needs to ride on the shoulders of SE Asians for life support. Go figure it's the go-to genre for movie "buffs" and tumblrinas.

>>71165940
He can't. He's a poser, a follower, he "loves" this movement because he read bout how artsy and revolutionnary it was. He has no opinions on the matter of his own. He's merely a sheep.

You're very right. I doubt any of these dilettantes can name any non-FNW French directors.

not being able to parse your retarded ambiguous post is not a failing on my part.

and yes you're entirely film illiterate if you think there's some sort of unified art house movement that's lasted since the 60s. never mind that art house predates the 60s. never mind that it's absolute retardation to try to group disparate styles from across the globe, from across five decades simply because you've watched a total of 10 non-Hollywood movies in your life.
