Blackface making fun of blacks was always shit. Lowest form of humor.
Blackface for theatre actors and shit? It's cool. Acting is pretending, so I don't have anything against races pretending to be other races or gender and theatre folks have been doing it for years. Usually, they don't bother with makeup though. Best Javert was a black guy btw.
Blackface in movie is a mixed bag. Movies are usually more "realistic" than live theatre, so it just looks weird.

Creepy as fuck is what it is man. I remember watching old black and white movies as a kid and this shit would scare the shit out of me. Imagine watching tv with shitty lighting and all you can see is that white and eyes. It's no worse than men dressing as women to do Shakespeare plays.
