Because in order to make them active in the plot in a way that doesn't piss off feminists these days they have to turn into insufferable bitches or mary sues. Name a single female character in TV produced in the last 10 years that couldn't have easily been a man (excluding the obvious: Births, Marriage, etc.). There are next to none.

Then again, you could replace plenty of men with essentially identical female characters but they would often feel out of place or even forced because of differences in biology.

I literally wanted to murder them both, at least Homer's mom is only in this episode but Lisa is in every episode and is like this all the time. She didn't become insufferable, she always was. Marge and her sisters were alright though.
