I tried watching it the other week. I made it through all of the first season and a chunk of the second before dropping it. It's like capeshit where no one uses their powers or even acknowledges them.
Would it have been so much to see Hartnett go wolfman vs some vampires? Or Dorian Gray enter into a battle with Frankenstein's Monster in a battle royale of immortals?

That's good, they've said everything they wanted to. For me the highpoint was the storyline about Frankenstein's monster. It made me really happy. I also liked the part about his past as the guard in the psychiatry. Other than that I feel like they wasted their time on that Lily and Dorian Gray stuff, it wasn't even remotely interesting. The wild west setting was cool too. A nice contrast to dark London.

Pretty much it seems like Eva Green wanted off the show and the show creator refused to do anything else with the series if Eva was off.
Show could easily have lived on with all the new storylines opened this 3rd season not to mention reintegrating Dorian and the Bride characters back into the main storyline.
Many shows outlive their primes and go on to many seasons past their expiration but Penny Dreadful still could have used 1 to 2 more seasons to sort everything.
Sadly Penny Dreadful is gonna be chalked up to another show that was ended before anything resolved with a mountain of open storylines

the events toward the end feel ridiculously rushed and it looks a bit like its basicly just a plan B version they made in case they wouldnt get the chance to continue with the story (which became the case then). greens character has almost no screentime at all over episode 8 and 9. also it feels weird how they just added another character with catriona that got no time at all to develop. the mummy leads with lyle become redundant and its odd to think that the whole introduction of jekyll/hyde is eventually meaningless.

Well that fucking sucks. Though to be fair the show wasn't really giving me what I wanted in a show filled with all the classic horror icons.
I wanted something closer to the 2005 Van Helsing, or a better League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Instead we ended up with people with supernatural powers being mean to one another with the odd bit of okay-action mixed in.
The show was worth it for their take on Frankenstein's monster, and Josh Hartnett as Ethan Chandler,. both of these should get their own series desu.
I was also pissed they killed off Van Helsing in the first season. Dayum shame.

What a strange show. None of the arc stuff ever seemed to come to fruition properly, the pacing was so weird and they'd just pull in and drop storylines at random.
That being said most episodes had at least one or two excellent scenes, and the occasional episode was entirely great. It's like a really well acted clusterfuck.
