Am I the only one who thinks the tactics used by Jon Snow and Ramsey were atrociously bad with numerous fundamental mistakes (exposing flanks ,terrible mixed unit tactics)
>>
>>71034898
should have fielded nothing but bows
>can penetrate any armor or shield
>pinpoint accuracy
>effective at any range

probably the only more powerful weapon than the bow is whatever baelish used to teleport all his dudes there
>>
>>71034898

Yes, because it was composed from a script which was probably hastily thrown together last year and didn't have a decently well-researched novel to fall back on for most of their information.
>>
>>71034898

The whole episode was dogshit
>>
You shouldn't think about this stuff there are dragons and the trees have faces why would anything make sense

Whatever he used isn't as powerful as whatever Reek and Lady Reek used to get to Meereen at Warp Speed

>>
>>71034898
Yes.
>cavalry just charges straight into infantry instead of circling around them, chasing down stragglers, etc..
>Bolton army completely surrounds Jon's army even though one of the golden rules of medieval warfare is to never completely surround your enemy
>Jon just completely eschews digging trenches and staying on the defensive and solo charges into Ramsay's numerically superior vanguard

What the fuck were they thinking.
>>

>>

>>

>one of the golden rules of medieval warfare is to never completely surround your enemy

why is this
>>
>>71034898
>One is borderline insane, is too cocky and generally thinks he's untouchable
>One is a kid who's never really lead an army before except against a band of wildfolk.

Gee i wonder why they aren't seasoned war tacticians.
>>
>>71035264
Jon is transitioning into a hot head.
>>
>>71035264
>>Jon just completely eschews digging trenches and staying on the defensive and solo charges into Ramsay's numerically superior vanguard

You're a fool. They mentioned that they dug trenches to their flanks, but Jon ran out into the battle as a result of Ramsay's ploy with Rickon. At that point, they had to send their army after him to protect their commander.

Also what's with this 'golden rule'?
>>
>>71035595
Presumably because fight to the death results in huge casualty on both side. It's often better to kill just enough of the enemy and let them flee
>>
you might be the only one who applied autistic armchair battle tactics to a fantasy tv show.
>>
>>71035106
>>71035266
wow u 2 r so edgy!
>>
>>71035595
Cornered enemies fight harder, it seems obvious but that's the rule

in a wider context it's more about not pressing your advantage more than you need to in any situation, not necessarily to be literally surrounding them. men that think their only alternative is death will fight harder and cost you resources
>>
Well both commanders were 20 year old hotheads. Ramsay was overconfident and likes violence and Jon Snow was blind with rage, and also a zombie.
>>
>>71035595
>>71035751
It's much more profitable to set up a pincer attack, leaving a chance to retreat backwards, and then squeeze the enemy into routing. While an army is in rout, you can chase them down with cavalry and wipe them out.

If you completely surround an enemy, they'll have no choice but to fight to the death, which will mean you'll lose more men in the process of finishing them.

>>
>>71034898
What i hated was that after Smalljon charged there were clearly still thousands of soldiers behind Ramsay but after Baelish showed up they apparently all dissapeared or we were supposed to believe they were part of that charge.
Ramsay was supposed to outnumber Jon two to one and they did a piss poor job of portraying that.

It's easier to rout your enemy and kill them while they're fleeing. This is why most medieval battles are so lopsided in terms of casualties. If you surround them completely they'll all fight to the death and you'll incur more losses.

It annoys me how Jon Snow seemingly lost all the battle sense he gained over the numerous battles he won using his brain up at the wall.

He didn't even lose his shit like that when his ginger bae was killed, yet literally fucking charged into 6000 good men on foot over some shitty little brother he barely even had a connection with.

Felt like a poor writing excuse to give Sansa the spotlight.
>>
>>71036358
Because it's easier to let them rout than fight them to their deaths.

When routed they can be simply chased by cavalry without much resistance.

I think it was a few things, He cared about his brother, he was there for him until he went to the wall, he thought he was dead at one point, when he was just there to save him and Ramsey put the arrow though him, he knew he was being played, Ramsey is an expert hunter, He could have easily hit that shot.

But I for one loved how he threw down his sword and grabbed a shield and just went to town on Bolton, though it does feel weird there is just a random Stark shield lying around.

Did you not pay attention?!??!

Team snow made a tactical plan... typical tactical plan. Which ginger shot to shit. Team snow ignored advice and continued.

Team Ramsey did what they do best. Play mind games. Pulled a seen right out of Apacaliptico ( bad spelling)

Team snow lost their shit and threw tactic out the window..luckily snow is currently untouchable.

Team snow refused to unleash the arrows because the mass casualties they would have recieved.

Team Ramsey made it clear he didnt give a fuck about his men dying. He unleashed arrows creating a mound of death between him and team snow.

Team snow lost thier shit and sent archers in

Team Ramsey sent in an entire force creating a u shape of shields and trapping team snow between a rock and a mountain of death.

Remember snow was out numbered by a shit load. Ramsey had nothing but time and soldiers.

Little finger with the bird crew cav made it

FYI I hoped for a better fight... but i loved how they showed how weak Ramsey truly was

Wait how did Stannis' army route the wildlings then go on to lose to Bolton then the Wildlings crush Bolton?

On a historical scale, it's not late at all. We're only 18 years out from the fall of the targs. Empires decline over centuries.

Bolton was defeated by the master rusery of CIA. The wildlings were merely one of his many honeypots.

Sansa not mentioning LF at any point is the continuation of the vale plotline. LF has planned all of this. He wanted to destroy the Boltons and he also wanted Snow and wildings to suffer heavy casualties, leaving winterfell entirely for his own taking.

This is why Sansa turns up at Castle Black and demands that Jon help her reclaim winterfell. This is also why she intentionally avoids mentioning LF, who has instructed her against doing so.

In the scene in the command tent before the battle, what you're supposed to be seeing is her struggle to decide whether to remain faitfhful to LF or to inform Jon and save a couple thousand wilding lives. Only, the actress sucks and d&d are shit writers.

I didn't really care about the execution of the battle, it was a typical case of hollywood tactics, which we see almost everywhere.

But 2 things really rustled my jimmies.

1. Judging from how much time took for Littlefinger to arrive, Vale's army should be within 10 miles from Winterfell when the battle started. Having that knowledge, why the fuck did Ramsay sally forth? Also note that vale's invasion should be going on for a couple of weeks, considering how vast the North is and the siege of Moat Cailin. There is no way for Ramsay to be unaware of this, yet he acted surprised when he got charged. There is also a limit to how much you can say "it's just Ramsay not giving a fuck xD". He is not suicidal.

2. Sansa not informing Jon about Vale reinforcements. The only reason why Jon survived is because of plot armor. Or if we want to pretend that this is not the case, he was just very lucky (xD). Under any other circumstance, her beloved brother would be dead. An ambush could still be played correctly and with minimal loses if Sansa informed him. But she didn't, because she knew that the writers wouldn't kill him off. But they still lost over 90% of their army, all because they wanted to make Sansa seem like a "player of the game of thrones xDDDD" who makes stratagems and ruses.

she's not great but I think she did a good job this episode.

and i think you're wrong about the masterplan - there was no actual opportunity for LF to propose it. Arya getting actually stabbed (among other things) demonstrates that D&D will sometimes imply a more interesting twist is coming than actually emerges.

I wonder if there was a lot of reshooting this season as they tried to figure out some version of events that might at least please normies.

>Jon initially getting his shit pushed in like we saw

I wouldn't even be mad with something in that vein happening.

I believe he informs of his plan around the time of the meeting at the whorehouse in mottsville. i could be wrong about her initial request for help being wrong, but a CIA plot is the only logical way to explain her never mentioning him, despite being given so many obvious opportunities to do so.

>You're a fool. They mentioned that they dug trenches to their flanks, but Jon ran out into the battle as a result of Ramsay's ploy with Rickon. At that point, they had to send their army after him to protect their commander.

Why? So what if Jon dies? Sansa was the one who was important.
>>
Tactics can be explained. Ramsay is an evil cunt who is only good at killing people. He is not a tactician. He wanted to kill as many people as possible in the battle. If the books are anything to go by he also would have wanted to weaken the Northern Houses a bit by getting a bunch of their men slaughtered. Jon had a plan but then he got angry and the plan went to shit. Sansa was the only samrt one here desu She told him not to do what he wanted him to do and he did it anyway.

What i want to know is how the fuck did Peter Baelish get past the twins?
If he could cross into the North without Walder Frey's permission then why was the crossing so important to Robb? If Baelish can march across with an army of plated knights surely Robb could have with his northmen.
Even if he was already in the North by the time he got Sansas letter, what was he doing there? And it still begs the question as to why the fuck would the Lannisters/Freys/Tyrells/Boltons alliance allow Baelish to waltz around the north with an army for what to them would appear to be no reason?

You dont have to deal with the enemy fighting to the death
If you get them in a pincer a lot of men will die quickly and run away because they will see an escape route. That way your losses are minimized and the battle is over way faster.
Its far more practical to try and get your enemy to run away then to kill them all.
>>
>>71034898
Maybe they had ships? Or LF built a bunch of jetpacks for everyone to use.
>>
>>71038330
It was good but it is VERY clear the writing is in decline, so many more plot holes and predictable tropes each episode, characters actions/motivations becoming more incoherent each episode, character development for some becoming totally schizophrenic, already two major plotlines completely gone to shit (Arya and the Sneks).
>>
>>71038431
Before it was the Blacksmith that made Robert's hammer, at least in the books, i forget his name.
>>
>>71038229

Look at a map.

At the heart of Westeros is the crossroads, where the major north-south and east-west roads crosspaths. This is where the Crossroads Inn is and this is where the Trident is.

Riverrun is west of the crossroads. It's positioned within the Riverlands, which contains many tributaries. One of the largest rivers is the Red Fork. When Robb marched south from Winterfell he marched to Riverrun which required crossing the Red Fork. And the only crossing of the Red Fork, a crossing that could handle an army, is the Twins.

Robb could have circumvented the Twins but he would have had to head south down the Kingsroad then head west. That takes him dangerously close to Lannister territory, as well as adding weeks (possibly months) to his transit time.

All of this shit is west of the Kingsroad. The Vale is east of it. Littlefinger's force could simply head north up the Kingsroad and bypass the Freys entirely.

The real problem is how they were able to pass through Moat Cailin, which is the stronghold that makes the North impossible to conquer. He would have had to capture the castle or pretend he was coming to aid Lord Bolton. It's also possible that he traveled by sea to White Harbor, which is near Moat Cailin. In the books White Harbor publicly supports House Bolton but is secretly loyal to House Stark, and could possibly receive Littlefinger's army. But the show hasn't established that so it's a long shot.
>>

>didnt crush anyone by falling on them

After re-watching the scene to observe exactly what happened in the pincer maneuver, Ramsey did NOT fully encircle them. Their flank was left open past a pile of dead bodies. "The art of using troops is this:
……When ten to the enemy’s one, surround him;
……When five times his strength, attack him;
……If double his strength, divide him;
……If equally matched you may engage him;
……If weaker numerically, be capable of withdrawing;
……And if in all respects unequal, be capable of eluding him,
……….for a small force is but booty for one more powerful."

Ramsay's strategy was similar to hannibal's in the punic wars. He knew the roman forces would charge in without restraint (because thats how the romans fought), so he set up an attack in which his inferior force would envelope and surround the superior force and force them all into a tight space (to limit manueverablity and strategization). +game of thrones seems like it straddles between medieval and roman technology (with the unsullied using spears and the lannisters employing greek fire). Honestly medieval weaponry was not any better than roman armaments in terms of effectiveness, there was just a large technological fallout for a long period of time.
>>
>>71038330
What really ruined it for me was the pike wall surrounding Jon's army. How did they not see that shit coming?
>>
>>71039040
Thinking about all the things they could have had Wun Wun do make me legitimately upset.
Have him sit on a distant hilltop shooting enormous arrows into the Bolton ranks.

Have him show up, armored and carrying a huge improvised club, right when Ramsay has committed his forces to the attack, spooking the shit out of the Bolton/Karstark troops because nobody has ever seen a goddamn giant.
>>
>>71037942
this is a guess, but if the soldiers advanced too fast it might have broken formation and allowed the wildlings to break in. iirc phalanxes/spear walls are only as good as the discipline of their ranks. Since they're carrying spears, if the enemy tried to break through they'd lose precious time trying to switch weapons, by which time they'd already be dead. Therefore it'd be to their advantage to advance slowly because the Bolton's assumption was that they had the enemy surrounded and so could take their time methodically killing them
>>
>>71039058
I could *maybe* see him coming to that realisation if they spent a good few scenes of him contemplating how much of a bitch she is... sadly it won't be happening next week (unless it's incredibly rushed) so that's another year of waiting for him to do something interesting ever since coming back to King's Landing.
