Is this the closest we'll ever get to Lovecraftian on film?

>>
>>70998556
To be fair, it was literature that worked because it made you create your own visions, plus, it was the early 1900's and not a visual medium, so really, people just need to accept that Lovecrafts style will never work like that. Imply and tell, but dont show. Build up that sense of dread. A CGI fest lovecraft movie would be shit no matter what.

Digimon Tamers had some Lovecraft in it.

Event Horizon was still the only good one I've seen. I didn't like At The Mouth Of Madness, but Sam Neil is based.

It's hard to take the Davy Jones stuff seriously when the rest of the second and third movies are so farcical. Like the first movie was a lighthearted action-comedy but the next two were just straight up comedy.

Bloodborne is definitely more fucked up than The Thing, which is essentially just an alien movie. It also has plenty og cosmic horror type stuff littered throughout the game via various bosses, locations, and enemies. Oh and did I mention you turn into a literal squid demi-god at the end of the game? Because that happens to. Bloodborne is seriously fucking weird, and obviously inspired by Lovecraft. It's also a great Souls game to boot.

I'm sorry, I don't give a fuck about terrible uninspired video games. Especially ones that wish they were Dark Souls. Lovecraft is so much more than fucking squid monsters and tentacled horrors you low brow scum. The Thing is the most Lovecraftian thing I have ever seen. I see the irony in that, as the Thing was a tentacled monster. But everything else about the movie, from its beginnings, to the end, to the atmosphere of it. Everything is totally Lovecraftian.

And did I mention that I don't give a fuck about Bloodborne nor have I played it? Those terrible Dark Souls games are way too "lol look how hardcore I am this is totally what makes me a leet epic gaymer now right bros!?!?" for me. Try growing up.

"Of the complete biological inferiority of the negro there can be no question he has anatomical features consistently varying from those of other stocks, and always in the direction of the lower primates... Equally inferior and perhaps even more so is the Australian black stock, which differs widely from the real negro. In dealing with these two black races, there is only one sound attitude for any other race (be it white, Indian, Malay, Polynesian, or Mongolian) to take and that is to prevent admixture as completely and determinedly as it can be prevented, through the establishment of a colour line and the rigid forcing of all mixed offspring below that line."

I disagree but you're entitled to your opinion. That's not true either.
You go mad because you realize that because the elder gods exist and are what they are and do what hey do, everything man knows and does is both pointless and false.
Lovecraft's whole idea is that either you "go mad from the revelation" or we panic and plunge the world into a neo-dark age in a fit of sheer denial.

I didn't stop playing them because they got popular or because people think it makes them hardcore. I stopped playing them because after Demon Souls especially they got casualized as fuck and are basically Call of Duty tier now in that every year or so a sequel gets crapped out and its literally the same thing. Tentacles does not make something Lovecraftian.

Lovecraft used monsters (often admittedly tentacley) as a tool to evoke an atmosphere of dread and hopelessness.

If you gave Freddy Kruger tentacles that wouldn't make it Lovecraftian horror.

Now that I've had multiple affirming (Yous), I'll do the boring task of listing off why From Beyond is the "Lovecraftian" kino par excellence: SBOILERS:

-tentacle monsters? Check.
-quotidian country estate, housing a scientist's experiments? Check.
-eerie light lets you know when the Other Plane is near? Check.
-corruption of the Eldritch Unknown driving all that it touches to depravity and madness? Check.
/x/-tier "pineal gland" story element? Check.
Direct adaptation of a Lovecraft story which yet escapes latter-day "xD ebin Cthulhu memes" redditry? Check.
BDSM cheese tossed in for a little extra "just because" edge? Check.

Katsuhiro Otomo's Memories

Good list, and I see someone mentioned The Last Wave already.

Here are some others:

My personal fave: The Whisperer in Darkness (2011)

Die Farbe [The Colour] (2010) (it's the best Color Out of Space adaptation that has been done)

稀人 [Marebito] (2004)

The Haunted Palace (1963)
Lovecraft crossed with Poe run through the AI Hammer machine. This marks the first time (at least that I know of) that a Lovecraft story was adapted for the silver screen. Despite carrying the E.A. Poe title, the story is a very close adaptation of "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward".

オトシモノ [Ghost Train] (2006)

Another of my faves: Quatermass and the Pit [Five Million Years to Earth] (1967)

The Woods (2006)

Crucial Fulci: The House by the Cemetery & City of the Living Dead

Midnight Meat Train (2008)
Europa Report (2013)

Essential elements of a Lovecraft story
>a general population that lives in blissful ignorance
>an inquisitive hero who stumbles on something strange
>the hero is driven, possibly for reasons he doesn't even understand, to investigate the strange thing
>some people warn him not to dig further or dismiss his investigation as foolish, the hero continues regardless
>hero discovers a vast and terrible conspiracy that he is powerless to stop
>hero is reviled or dismissed as a madman but still feels he has to get the word out and trys to warn others
>in the end none of it matters and the hero laments ever even learning the terrible truth

>actual tentacle monsters - optional

The problem is people think tentacle monsters are essential and try to make it about either fighting them or getting killed by them.

>>
>>71019019
Pretty much. Actual Lovecraft doesn't play so well these days since howling existential dread is kinda par for the course now.

Gazing upon the abyss of the stars and trying to truly comprehend your existence against the near immeasurable and intricate forces of the universe is more Lovecraft than any CGI tentacle monster is.
>>
>>71020587
He did not defeat him he knocked him back into his prison.

Lovecraft pretty much always portrays the humans as powerless v his crazy monsters. This is partly because he doubted his own ability to write action sequences though, considering the actual confrontation with Cthulhu is the weakest part of call of Cthulhu he might be right.

The chase in shadow over innsmuth is great though so he got better at it over time.

It may be at great personal coat, but nah.

There's literally nothing Lovecraftian about that.
Lovecraft doesn't just equal tentacles you know.
>>
>>70996829
Wow alot of Lovecraft hate on here huh? The whole idea of esoteric knowledge really interests me and his stories read almost more like mysteries than horror. If you don't like him fine but he's popular for a reason. Try Haunter of the Dark...its really good
>>
>>71020998
>humans are powerless v his crazy monsters

>your own example
>West and the others being able to take out the not-zombies until they come back from not-hell because fuck you

I only finished those 2 so far, and even if i sort of felt the atmosphere more in Reanimator than CoC("shit was so fucked up that seeing it would drive you mad and it was all the horrors of the universe and shit-are you scared yet?" or "it was so fucking terrifying that the man could not even try to remember his story to describe the place... except he actually did and conveniently died after writing up everything that happened!").

Maybe it's like that other anon said, we've been so desensitized by horror movies and stuff that just saying how it's so terrifying doesn't really do anything.

Yup. The monsters were just existential dread made flesh basically, they were a reflection of his "cosmic indifferentism" philosophy.

>>71021472
I think its probably not right to call his work horror honestly cause its far removed from modern horror stuff. You shouldn't expect to actually be scared they're just... Creepy? They're more like mysteries/thrillers not horror.

Probably the same could be said about Poe. I've read all his stuff and never felt scared once, I enjoyed it and they were kinda creepy but not "horrifying".
>>
>>71021472
I don;t think it's desensitization, it's just that modern people are more aware of concepts of existence, self, consciousness etc. From a young age we are all made aware that we're tiny specks hurling precariously through a near infinite void on a tiny rock whose existence will last for a minuscule fraction of a planet that will last for a miniscule fraction of the universe.

The things that Lovecraft uses to try and scare us aren't so wild anymore, they're things we're either comfortable with or find interesting and silly (dimensional octopus gods).

We're more terrified of superviruses and AI now, times change. I wouldn't call that desensitization, just cultural fears changing with time.

The Call of Cthulhu (2005)

Die Farbe (2010)

Those are the most decent and faithful adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft that have ever been done.

These amateur short films are pretty good, too:

What? The source of his madness stemmed from monstrous creatures (some of which even had tentacles) which were literally called Old Ones. In the Mouth of Madness is a caricature of Lovecraft's work, which isn't really a bad thing.

Great scene, gonna check it out

I don't think anyone here actually hates lovecraft. they just hate how normies think its nothing but "haha tentacles xDD" and look no deeper than that.

Why are there 3 figures running? Is that a mistake or is there another story about shoggoths besides At the Mountains of Madness?

In my experience, normies have never even heard the word Lovecraft. To know who he is, and that tentacles are somehow associated is a pretty large jump forward.

In my last company (apprx 30 people) nobody had ever heard his name...let alone read a book for pleasure.
>>
>>71000373
It's slightly inspired by lovecraft, that doesn't make it lovecraftian
Lovecraft was all about unreliable narrators and villainous entities that couldn't be killed, there's a lot more to lovecraft than just tentacles
>>
>>71025742
Because the artist probably didn't want to remain 100% faithful to the story or he/she actually didn't read it?
Use your fucking brain.

>>70996829
No, we will eventually get tons of movies focused around lovecraftian horrors after marvel shit is done.

I definitely got a Lovecraftian vibe from TD. It was the fact that something much larger than they originally thought was happening. There was a potential kult that went deep into high society; implying they could not rely on their peers.
>>
>>71025821
He's talking about pop culture sheep or faux nerds.
I'd also include a lot of real nerds and most of Lovecraft's "fanbase" in the list.

The Shadow over Innsmouth, The Thing on the Doorstep and various poems. They are only mentioned.

As an elitist, I know that word disgusts you. However, it's hard to deny the sheer influence HPL has had in the horror community. Artists have used him for vast amounts of inspiration. Much of which is not directly associated with HPL's direct work, but does contain certain elements.

You must understand this.

This guy gets it!

Something about a giant squid fighting sailors on a boat that seems adventuresome. Same story written by HPL would be horror.

And there seems to be some HPL fans here. Anyone play the Arkham Horror? I play Wrath of Ashardalon & Legend of Drizzt, but always here AH was really difficult.
>>
>>71025777
Creepy Louisiana cult, powers (political not super natural but still) beyond their control working against them, the yellow king and carcosa are from a book that inspired HPL, they largely just used the name but I thought its interesting that the book is about a play that drives people insane if they see it and in the show there was the horrible videotape, Rusts existenal musings reflect the deeper themes HPL tried to develop, monsters and super natural powers were mostly just tools he used to drive home the "humans are insignificant" theme and that's what's really supposed to be scary about his stories they're supposed to make you reflect on the fact that you're a speck of dust in a vast universe you barely understand but as this anon pointed out >>71021789 people don't bat an eye at that anymore.

That's really what his stories about though so I'd say TD, despite having nothing overtly super natural, captures the Lovecraft vibe better than most actual adaptations of his work because super natural shit is really secondary to the existential themes and that's what all the movies with actual monsters in them miss.
