When did it happen to you?

The day I was born. I wasn't made for these times.

Technically, it never happened because I was never "with it."

>>
A few years ago. I'm 27 now and I don't know what younger people are talking about most of the time. The slang they use, their frames of reference like youtube shit and social media memes, the clothes they wear, and even their outlook on life seem very alien to me and not at all how i remember being at their age. It doesn't bother me though because it's a rite of passage and I know it will happen to them too soon. Also I'm safe in the knowledge that my worldview is correct and they are just naive.

A lot of media is aimed at the young so its confusing at first because everything you are accustomed to doing becomes outdated. You basically just have to change all the media you consume and start doing old man things.

when horror movies became 2edgy4u torture porn which then turned into the zombie craze which then turned into the camera ghost movie bullshit which then turned into the possession movies. and now they just mix them all together and crap something out. I really miss practical effects and honest to goodness comedy in my horror films. I think Slither was the last movie to do that and do it well.
>>

Worst part is how everyone acted like it was incredibly underground.

I'll add some:
Youtube shit that isn't vloggers, attention whore gamergirls, or other vanity obsessed people.
Steam
Mobile phones and phone apps
Selfies
Social media
Viral videos

When I graduated college and stopped going to frat parties. That was literally my only connection to popular music. I have absolutely no idea what songs are popular nowadays and when I'm talking with people I often have to ask them to repeat the name of a popular musical artist. Pretty much the whole social media explosion in general. Don't get me wrong, I was in it on the ground floor from BBS's, IRC, AIM, ICQ, MSN to all the various 'host your own page of garbage' styled platforms like MySpace, FaceBook, and a bunch of local Canadian ones.

After awhile I just got burned out. Over-saturation of social media across every facet of life got a little boring, and as I grew up I no longer felt the need for approval or to try and make new friends online. I still get "it" because it's all the same shit in a different pile, I just no longer feel like doing it or caring about it. To every older generation teenage culture will always seem bizarre but most people all end up the same by their mid-late twenties.

Also to shoehorn in some quick nostalgia:
>Never again will teenagers have to phone a girl's house and awkwardly ask her mom/dad "hi uhh... could i p-plz speak to claire?"

I personally stopped giving a shit a few years ago, when I realised its all a fucking joke. Pop culture and trends are pure money grabs and artificial marketing schemes.

I remember when people used to like music for sounding good/having good lyrics.

I dont listen to the radio, but the other day my sister gave me a lift and the radio station she was listening to made me gasp. Its not music anymore.
>>
>>70979274
>I dont listen to the radio, but the other day my sister gave me a lift and the radio station she was listening to made me gasp.
same thing happened to me for a radio station that played exclusively power ballads, I really really hate that kind of song. Truth is mainstream music has always been hit and mostly miss.

>>70976314
Fuck no, we have words for a reason, in this case they'd be xenophobes, or we could just say they're anti-immigration.

What I meant is that even 90s hip hop was melodical and had a certain appeal to it.

Ill give you examples:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiQoVv0FSKQ

I dont even like hip hop, but in 20 years, music has changed alot.

100% correct. Its fucking crazy how lazy mainstream rappers have gotten.
Just a dull beat with lots of lows and monotonous words thats on repeat.
Don't have an example because I don't listen to that(i get my fair share of that shit when with my mates)

I think the reddit's """revival""" of montage parodies was the point where I realized that I wasn't with it anymore

They're fucking obnoxious compared to the montage parodies of yore. It's literally a community of 12 year old pewdiepie fans jerking off to the same 5 youtubers "ironically" mashing memes, doritos and gun overlays together and trying to justify by claiming that "the effects are good"

>lol xD ILLOOOMINATI CONFIRMED!!! DOGE!!! DANK MAYMAYS!! XXXD SEE ITS FUNNY BECAUSE IM BEING IRONIC NOSCOPE

But then I realized that this is the shit younger people like these days. And that I wasn't any better when I laughed at youtube poops and people playing "PINGAS" "Dinner" and "MAMA LUIGI" 500 times over

the thought of how detached i'll be from "it" in 50 years or so fucking terrifies me

Twitter was a watershed one for me. I remember looking at it, considering whether I should get an account for this thing. I think the main thing was the character limit, that made me go naaah, that seems stupid, I'm out, is it even possible to communicate an intelligent thought in 160 characters? Nope, and that's the point
>>
What the fuck is a "dab". I assumed it was weed concentrate, but apparently it's like a boasting pose or some shit.
>>
>>70977477

No that's quite millenials. No, in actuality that's generation x being the first ones with the money to buy that stuff which their parents wouldn't due to cost and not knowing better. Millenials took it from their older siblings or parents in case of youngest millenials and post-millenials similarly so, except with more earlier life influence than most millenials.

While in my early 20's several years ago, i've had people in their late 30's to 40's talking about facebook contacts etc. I have been slipped in discussions, and have received what i could only describe as weirded out expressions when i told them i don't use any social media.
>>
>>70970709
>Selfies
Can we talk about why THAT became a word out of nowhere and everyone acted like taking a picture of yourself was some new thing?

The term "selfie" only came around after phones with front facing cameras started coming out, but really people had been doing that shit all over Myspace, and that was back in the days of brick phones with T9 keyboards, years before front facing cameras.

Yeah, you had to just point that shit at yourself and awkwardly triey to press the "click" button, with no idea how it was going to look, then you'd do that like a dozen times and post the best one, and it sucked, but it's BEEN A THING FOREVER. Vapid bitches would still go through all that trouble to post the perfect profile pic, years and years before the word "selfie" was ever said by anyone.
>>
>>70979907
As with almost every genre, you just need to look and you'll find that there is a lot of great things out there. Check out Madlib and some of his collabs, like with Freddie Gibbs and MF DOOM. I could go on, but of course radio music is bland, it appeals to those not looking for music, but for those that just take it.

Over the next few months and the upcoming years you're going to find yourself referring to people of cultural importance as "the kids". As in "Wait, is THIS what the kids are watching these days?" This is normal. Though it may seem strange to you, as "hip" and "savvy" as you once thought yourself to be is about to be proven to no longer be the case. Constantly. Remember that funny joke you were going to tell about the tv show we ALL watched when we were kids? Nobody gets that anymore. And it's not just that they don't get it, they don't understand there being a possibility of a context in which it would make sense. Be prepared to see a lot of young, attractive, dumbfounded faces in your future. Basically you have two choices. You can A.) quietly move on into the adult world where things get done and not be bothered by youthful flights of fancy, or B.) struggle in a vain attempt to stay relevant by religiously staying on top of whatever flavor of the week is has piqued the interest of the 18-25 set. The choice is yours, but I think I know how you'll pick. Listen, we have shuffle board over here. Shuffle board and the sweet release of death.

Sorry to burst your bubble but I'm 35 and have been setting trends for the past decade as to what 'the kids' will be listening too and watching and will continue this for the foreseeable future.

Sorry you couldn't keep up, but such is the life of a pleb.

Jesus, so much this. Me (25) and my friends (from 20 to 30) bumped into that fat guy with a funny voice outside a club. He was 32 and and sounded really obnoxious and funny while trying to teach us about life and what really matters and how old he feels. Tbh we wouldn't mind him if he didn't pretend he's that much older than us or wouldn't try to smoke weed together.

Kinda sucks with under age ones trying to get into places.

I guess I have not gotten into all the new music. When I was growing up no one listend to techno, now everyone loves it and my fave artist are almost no bodies. Who the fuck is Snails?

anyway, keeping myself surrounded by young folks keeps me with it. I am actually not with friend of my age. feels weid

it was last year

i started my own business last year and i stopped going out as regularly as I used to so I could launch it and work on it.

it's since expanded and floating on it's own, but i'm so far removed from popular culture and new music and movies that I don't know shit anymore.

now i just frankly dont give a shit and i dont care to catch back up. i will enjoy my gladiator and robocop in peace as i descend slowly into senility. all new television is asscakes unless it fulfills my set of standards and i only want to see movies made by directors i already know and like.

10 years ago when I movied to university. I never had a tv so I don't follow all the reality shows, the majority of my country's tv series or "celebrities", music and all that.

I've only been watching movies. Apart from the oldies I try to watch all the new blockbusters and Game of Shits so in that regard at least I have "it".

>>
>>70970163

Never was particularly with it.

Adult Swim still churns out the stuff I like to watch. Listen to mainstream shit all the time because work in a restaurant, Cia is pretty good.

If anything all these recent trends in culture is the same routine of marketers selling counter culture. The only ones following trends seem to be underages.

Counter-culture my entire life and I don't mean to do it to be edgy, it's just how I am. I think it's unconsciously how I remove myself from other people and close myself off that makes me feel so antiquated. I only seem to relate to old people, not boomers but people older than that even.

I'm 28 and pop has always been shit. The nadir was the late 90s to very early 00s; radio had been in decline for a while and marketing and schemes among the various RIAA studios had coalesced into a powerhouse that could make money off whatever they decided was popular, Limp Bizkit was a product of this time.

If you're not liking electronic music, that stuff has been around since the late 70s in a very similar to present form and even earlier (the 50s) in a very primitive form. The biggest difference with the stuff in the spotlight now is how poppy it is. If you don't like the abrasive electronic noises, now you know how your grandparents felt when they heard how how the boomers decided they were gonna play guitar. The sounds are both liked specifically because of the abrasive quality. Some of the more abrasive stuff almost sounds like it could be from a Whitehouse album.

Nhb looking back on my youth I now realize all the time women wanted to fuck but I was just too fucking stupid to notice. You probably have 5 women right now craving your cock but you don't even know it and let your own bullshit and obliviousness get in the way. Or maybe you realize one of em but are holding out cause she's only 7/10 and you're gonna be 16 forever so who cares, right?

It's okay, in another 15 years you can go and tell youngsters how there are some that want to fuck them but they don't notice, and then they can in turn ignore your advice and the circle of life is complete.

Dubstep is great though and the logical progression of electronic music that came before it.

The only people I know that dislike Dubstep are 'born in the wrong generation' plebs that have been listening to classic rock stations since they were 12 and think Steppenwolf is good music.

I'm almost 30 and apparently I get cooler and more respected in that sense with age. People younger than me are more interested in what I like than what they like. It feels like kids have no identity anymore or something, like smart phones have taken away any sense of discovery or unique identity that I had at their age. It wouldn't be so sad to me if they just loved some new thing that I didn't like but literally all my 17 year old cousin talks about is fucking vape tricks and how he's mad he can't compete because of his age. Seriously he has no opinion on anything, music, movies, books, science, culture, it's all whatever everyone else agrees with on social media. It's almost like they're turning into bees or something
