I really liked that the main character is clearly mentally ill and somewhat hard to cheer for. He's not good or a hero, and he's not an antihero either. he's a broken manchild. In the end you just feel sorry for everyone in the story.
It's probably making some kind of SJW point about how violence is never the answer, but I just found it refreshing to watch a movie where nobody's worth rooting for and nobody's even worth rooting against.
Plus it was really pretty.

I don't think they're afraid they'd fail utterly, I just think that they're smart enough to realise that if they made a 'real' movie they open themselves up to a lot of pedantic criticism, regardless of how good or bad it is, though it would most likely be above average at best.
Now you might say that pedantic criticism is still criticism and you're right and RLM knows this (they're brand is based on it even) they just don't really want it directed their way.
Which is fine, sometimes it takes a bigger man to admit you can't or don't want to do something than vice versa.

You also have to consider that they don't have a huge budget to pay for more crew/actors, and most of their usual actors probably couldn't handle a legit dramatic role. So unless they move out of Milwaukee, I don't see RLM producing a "real" movie any time soon. They're smart enough to know their strengths and downplay their weaknesses.
And who the fuck would want to leave beautiful Milwaukee anyway. It's Algonquin for "the good land"
