What are the essential history / medieval kino (no fantasy)?

There's braveheart, Henry V, and that's literally it. How come there are so few movies set in medieval europe?
>>
>>70915173

Not sure, but I'd bet we won't be seeing any for quite some time. A film with a majority white male cast? Never gonna happen these days.
>>
>>70915231

I'm just sad the genre was never explorer properly. Lord of the rings came and then we suddenly started getting these D tier shitty Hollywood fantasy flicks. A well done film about the black plague or crusades would be great, or maybe a trilogy set during the war of the roses.
>>
Theres a few tv series though. I'm not too familiar but pillars of the earth was pretty good
>>
>>70915386

I've been meaning to watch vikings / spartacus / rome, I know it's not exactly medieval but still. Are they any good?

Vikings is badass for weird, simple reasons - i.e. the impeccable casting of different aged actors to play the same character over time, the blending of unexplained semi-paranormal things into a historically grounded setting and getting away with it well, season (even two) long cons that pay off with huge levels of satisfaction, that sort of thing.

Spartacus is porn and swords and awesome, low-budget 300 ripoffs. Not for everyone, but I love it.

I highly recommend it. Don't expect to get fuzzy feelings out of it though.
It was directed by the guy who did Starship Troopers by the way, and was born out of his desire to make a realistic medieval movie that didn't portray their life as a fun and whimsical adventure.
>>

To be honest I couldn't tell whether it was good or bad while watching it but in the end and looking back it was quite enjoyable. Something about the way it's shot feels a bit off, I think that's why some people find it difficult to engage in.

Bean and Nyman both give fantastic performances. Fuck Eddie Redmayne, though. He's got one of the most punchable faces I've ever seen.

That movie has nothing to do with historical reality. William Shakespeare could not, unaided, have produced the immortal writings bearing his name.

He did not possess the necessary literary culture, for the town of Stratford where he was reared contained no school capable of imparting the higher forms of learning reflected in the writings ascribed to him. His parents were illiterate, and in his early life he evinced a total disregard for study. There are in existence but six known examples of Shakspere's handwriting. All are signatures, and three of them are in his will. The scrawling, uncertain method of their execution stamps Shakspere as unfamiliar with the use of a pen, and it is obvious either that he copied a signature prepared for him or that his hand was guided while he wrote. No autograph manuscripts of the "Shakespearian" plays or sonnets have been discovered, nor is there even a tradition concerning them other than the fantastic and impossible statement appearing in the foreword of the Great Folio.

Shakspere's daughters were illiterate. His daughter Judith, at the age of 27, could not even sign her name.

If this guy wrote the plays bearing his name how would he have permitted his own daughter to reach womanhood and marry without being able to read one line of the writings that made her father wealthy and locally famous? It makes no sense.
>>

The Decameron has been remade a number of times. It's early renaissance (black plague era) but you get the point.

Check it out.

Another obvious one is Robin Hood movies which are set in medieval England.

The 90's are where everything that requires high budget started to get good in general.

80s and prior are only good for movies set in their time where they didn't have to literally create worlds from scratch, see star wars, shit looks like a homemade movie nowadays.

kek, braveheart?
The film where the Battle of Stirling Bridge was fought in a field nowhere near a river? Where Isabella of France (who should be 3 years old) is off having an affair and getting knocked up?
Try again chum.

This was a fucking nice movie, to bad they changed the lead actor in the second one also the protag got butchered by making him an edgy whoremonger.

I was just giving the guy some recommendations and I think of the show that never was after the original movie. Hell you get rid of smart phones and most of the modern amenities it's pretty damn perfect for a Pyscho prequel.

/His/ It's more of a frame of mind to me.

Emma: A Victorian Romance might be worth checking out if you're ok with anime. As far as I know it's historically accurate (and employed a historical advisor).

Is that the one where they have black actors playing major roles in medieval England because if it is i saw an advert for it and thought it looked good and then the Queen appears and shes black how can anyone watch that and take it serious its just historically fucked and would put me off.
>>
Kingdom of heaven (directors cut)

but yeah the genre is severly lacking in quality movies, most of it is just shite like ironclad, which can be fun to watch but nothing stunning or remarkable
>>
>>70921741
its not beyond the realm of possibility that there may be black/ arab etc merchants, mercenarys and missionaries lurking about, but when its clear they are there for token muh diversity value only it really hurts my suspension of disbelief

>history / medieval kino (no fantasy)

either your reading comprehension isn't the best or you didn't even get the basic plot
>>
Bravehearts one of my favorite movies but they could have done so much better imagine if they had been a bit more historically accurate with the battle at Stirling bridge plus claiming Longshanks to be a pagan is nonsense didnt he even go on a crusade during his reign? Braveheart couldve been fucking goat if abit more accurate.

Europe is fine and all,

but why are there never american movies about chinese history? I have no real concept of their eras or history.. Only a vague idea of that one emperor that conquered everywhere just to end the nonstop wars and got the tomb with all the statues.
Seriously their history must be fascinating

Look at how people in the near past 1600s-1800s looked at foreigners with shock and curiosity in fact look at some areas even in the World today when a White person is there people were crowding around amused to see a strange sight so imagine how it wouldve been back then and there may have been a small amount of foreigners in trading ports and maybe large cities but it woulve been a tiny amount probably 99.9% of people back then would never have seen anyone different from them but when you see it in Medieval films they treat it as if people back then were as used to it as we are and were multicultural in the BBCs Robin Hood series they had Black villagers in Medieval England it completely destroys the immersion.

The most difficult thing about medieval films is tryin to convey the importance of the nobility.

Like, people hear the terms Duke and Earl thrown around without ever really understanding what those titles meant and entitled people to.

Trying to explain the importance of things like that, as well as the fanatical importance of religion in such times means the modern viewer is essentially robbed of the greatness of some of those stories.
