I used to think this based on the same superficial reasons I assume you're judging it by. I hated it with a passion when it was on, it represented everything that's wrong with television. It's a stupidly popular, colourful American sitcom full of beautiful people and product placement, filmed in front of a live studio audience. It also had a load of manufactured hype pushed in everyone's face at the time, and a cliched will-they-won't-they soap opera style relationship drama running through it. Everyone I knew who liked it was female or gay or an idiot.
Despite all this, I gave it a fair chance years after it had ended, watched a few episodes with an open mind and found it as funny as any other sitcom. I couldn't care less about the relationship crap but it made me laugh enough to justify watching the whole series and to be honest, those women are really easy on the eye. There are some genuinely touching moments between the guys as well, especially Joey and Chandler.
