I'm watching the 1st season of The Wire and I just got done watching the episode where DeAngelo teaches the younger kids chess. I was blown away! I had to watch it a couple times to really pick up on it, but did you guys realize that when he was teaching them about the chess pieces, he was really referring to THEM being the pawns! What an amazing metaphor!
It was so deep and meaningful, I am amazed by the deep symbolism of this.
Do the later seasons continue on with masterful symbolism like this? This was truly the pinnacle of storytelling that I have ever seen on a television show, and I think I can confidently say The Wire is the best show ever made without even having seen the entire series.
Also the acting is amazing. Idris Elba and Dominic West do a great job with their Baltimore accents.

But just another reason why The Sopranos is easily GOAT is to see, despite that Meadow is clearly a "good person," how she is subtly and slightly hypocritical, self-serving, immature, etc. at times, just like Tony and the rest, demonstrating that we all sort of have the same traits and desires, we just control them and express them to different degrees.
But it's particularly interesting when you see her similarities with Tony, since they're related.

Sopranos is 1-2 leagues better. Its themes are more fundamental and more subtly portrayed, and its characters much more lifelike. And the soundtrack is easily the best ever, and there's actually some visual storytelling.
The Wire just overtly and repetitively beats the viewer over the head with confined ideas about institutional dysfunctionality. Its subject matter is limited in that it only applies to modern life in a corrupt shit hole large city. Its characters are simplistic and merely serve as vessels to convey the shows commentary about institutional dysfunt. They aren't fleshed out people like Tony et al.

It's a couple kids talking about Nietzsche. Of course kids might be impressed by that philosophy when they're growing. Made perfect sense in context for a teen to start questioning exactly what AJ was questioning. And nothing about that part was integral to the show's subject matter, so its overtness doesn't characterize the show in general.
And the same with the counseling sessions. What was overtly discussed there didn't simply explain all of the show's subject matter. The sessions touched on it occasionally, but there's a lot more to interpret and connect in the show than what is said in those sessions.
The Wire, by contrast, offers little more than its obvious, repetitive commentary about dysfunctional bureaucracy. There's not really any point in watching it more than about 3 times as a consequence.

IDK, Deadwood's setting is kind of integral to it being about people forming a community and the small time, violent politics. I guess you could set each show elsewhere and different time, but maybe not. Then again, the dialogue was the best part of Deadwood, which is also tied closely to its setting/period.
I don't think setting is so much a "choice" as it is a "side-element" of the story.
