Quick theory here. This is going to be a loose adaptation to All You Zombies, a story about how one person, through time travel, ended up fucking himself by being a rare fully fertile hermaphrodite and having his own kid, who happened to also be him.
The dogtags are equations relating to quantum nechanics and relativity, which points to time travel.
He has what looks like a C section scar so the baby is strongly implied to be, impossibly, his own. The baby then disappears, probably due to a bizarre paradoxical side-effect. Kojima said the title, Death Stranding, was important, and that something that wasn't alive was stranded. Since the character logically shouldn't exist thanks to the paradox him having no beginning or end (being, in effect, his own entire lineage at once), one can argue that this is what was meant by that.
There's also a whale theme in the various beached animals and the title's similarity to to the term cetacean stranding (pic related). Dunno what that's all about, but it might just be Kojima's new calling card, as Moby Dick didn't have much to do with MGSV either.

I really want video games to be well written and for a brief moment I thought things were going that way.
After Mass Effect 3, I've been extremely cynical about it happening any time soon.
The truth is the gaming industry uses this "video games are art" meme to generate free publicity and interest from older gamers.
The average age of a gamer is getting older and touting a game's writing and drama is how the industry keeps old fags from quitting games altogether.
There are still good games but their artistic merit is questionable. Story is injected like it's any other product feature. The only reason The Last of Us had Ellie was because Bioshock made worrying about little girls popular.
I have no fucking clue what ambitions Telltale has. I've played some of their recent games and there's no indication that these stories need to be told. It feels more like Telltale is cashing in on popular IP.

I think that throwing MGS and Ellen Page together isn't quite fair. David Cage is a straight up hack autist with no idea what he's doing. Kojima is at least an autist who loves movies so he has a workable understanding of how to execute drama and action.
The rise of Bad Boss was pretty great in 3 before it got retarded in the sequels and his relationship with The Boss was pretty well done. He's not trying to be Shakespeare and break down the human condition, think of Metal Gear as a John Carpenter movie that probably went for longer than it should have.

People don't realise they want it, I'm not even memeing, a lot of highly successful franchies have this kind of storytelling (souls series for instance) and a lot of the most critically acclaimed games of all time benefit from bits and pieces of a complete product. The problem is that the state of gaming is much more dire than the state of movies, at least films are now cheap enough and with an acceptable art community that films can be made for the love of film, gaming doesn't have this yet, everything is still profit driven.
