Alright so i am a Warcraft fan and lore fanatic.
I came in knowing it the movie would not blow me away and didn't expect much. I went with people who had no clue about the lore.
That being said i feel some of main reasons it came out as a disappointment (aside from sub-par acting) was the failure to address alot of things explained in the lore. My friends asked me to fill in alot of those gaps that left them clueless during the film like why medivh turned evil what the fuck happened to orc homeworld and what both ending scenes were about.

All I played was Warcraft 3 but the movie was alright. Its very cheesy/campy which I'm fine with, and had a lot of high fantasy which makes I distinct as a blockbuster.

I went in with low expectations but I was still a bit disappointed because it felt like the film had a lot of potential. Not going to rant about it because I feel like the Director's Cut will make this a more palatable movie. I can easily see why this panned among critics--poor acting performances, hit and miss editing, script was very weak at points, and for such a high budget films parts of it felt incredibly cheesy. What makes me sad is that if the film lived up to its best moments (in particular the duel between Durotar and Gul'dan, which was fantastic) it could have been really good. But the fault probably lies with adapting
A few questions:
Why did they never explain what prompted Medivh to open the portal? That's a glaring plothole.
When Medivh was talking to Garona, did he imply that he could have been her father?
What was the "gift" Medivh gave to Garona? The teleport? Or something that will come up as a last minute asspull in the upcoming sequel?
What happened to the Frostwolf clan? Were they rounded up and butchered? Or imprisoned and subjugated? That was implied but then Durotar and Doomhammer barely responded to it later in the movie.
I really didn't understand the need for Khadgar to walk into the cube. Was the whole purpose of meeting her to tell him he could defeat Medivh? That was really weak.
They really should have started the series with the events of WC3, just plop us down in medias res with a voiceover intro briefly explaining the setting and then following the events of that timeline (through the end of Reign of Chaos) which could have made a very satisfying trilogy.

In the opening I would have Durotan include a monologue about how their people had banded together against an enemy in the process they destroyed their world and he's having doubts whether the people they slaughtered was worth it. Let Medivh keep Khadgar in the tower intially so Medivh can humor the thought of him becoming a Guardian and it allows some exposition dump on the Fel and what actually a Guardian is(possibly include the Council of Trisfal as an explanation but I can live if they retcon them out). Also include a scene where Durotan goes to talk to Blackhand or Gul'dan about concerns and he sees Gul'dan communicating with a sillohoute of Medivh before he talks to Orgrim about Gul'dan needs to be take care of Change the ending

The only events that happened in the movie were that the portal was opened and they had a battle near the portal which went unresolved.
Yet despite the fact that nothing happened and nothing was resolved this movie is two and a half hours long and still didn't have any fleshed out or memorable characters

You mean the story? There's a number of changes, but none of it was really demolishingly different. All the changes seem to be based on valuing it being a quality adaptation over a faithful one, which is perfectly fine.
Example being Ogrim being in the Frostwolf clan instead of leader of the Blackrock clan. Just makes it easier to establish his relationship with Durotan and doesn't really affect anything else.
Some were more impactful, but still acceptable like Gul'dan being the sole Orc warlock and public leader of the Horde instead of leader of his shadow council manipulating the Horde through his de facto puppet Blackhand. Changing this really let them do more with Gul'dan than they would be able to otherwise and again, it doesn't really change any outcomes or motivations.
Then some stuff was just left out like Sargeras being behind Medivh's corruption and Kil'Jaeden and Mannoroth corrupting the Orcs, creating the Horse. Adding this to the film would have bogged it down, requiring a lot of screen time to explain, and taxing on the audience to keep up with even more characters, but it was left open enough that it could be added in later if they were to do more films.
And then some stuff was added, which is the worst kind of change. Lothar's son, him being the Queen-consort's brother, Medivh implying he's Garona's father. This stuff is bad at face value, but can upgrade to okay if the story differs even more later and makes these details important.

Well, Warcraft has a lot of lore that's been expanded on time and time again. To fully understand everything that happens in the First War, you'd have to start with the Titans creating the world and go from there.
